TEACHER-STUDENT INTERACTION:: WHAT DO THE STUDENTS ASK?

Resumo: The verbalizations by a first-grade teacher and her pupilswere recorded during the development of classroom activities for sixmonths of the school year, in a total observation time of 9 hours and 45minutes. The data analysis yielded a system of categories which describesthe nature of pupils' questions, teacher's verbalizations and academicactivities. A great part of the pupils' questions consisted of requests forpermission to participate in academic activity or to go to the toilet, and forinformation about academic content. Nearly half of the teacher's verbalizationswere comprised of instructions or commands of disciplinary or academicnature. Although it was not possible to establish the types of question which would characteristically appear in each activity, some trends weredetected in the distribution of questions in relation to the form of presentationof the activities. The results are discussed mainly in terms of the restrictionimposed by classroom activities on pupils' curiosity.

The results are discussed mainly in terms of the restrictionimposed by classroom activities on pupils' curiosity.RESUMO - Ao longo de seis meses do período letivo, num total de 9 horas e 45 minutos, foram registradas as verbalizações de uma professora de 1ª msérie do Ensino Fundamental e de seus alunos, durante atividades de classe. Do tratamento e análise dos dados resultou um sistema de categorias que descreve a natureza das perguntas dos alunos, das verbalizações da professora e das atividades acadêmicas. Grande parte das perguntas consistia em solicitações de permissão para participar de atividade acadêmica ou para ir ao banheiro, e de informação relativa a conteúdo académico. Aproximadamente metade das verbalizações da professora foi composta de instrução ou ordem de natureza académica ou disciplinar. Embora não se pudesse afirmar que tipo de pergunta apareceria caracteristicamente em cada atividade, algumas tendências foram encontradas na distribuição das perguntas em relação à forma de apresentação das atividades.
