Resumo: Weiner and his associates have demonstrated thatpersons tend to explain the results of their behavior with positive ornegative outcomes using causes that involve, among others, threetopographical dimensions: internality vs. externality, stability vs.instability and controlability vs. incontrolability. At the same time, these studies have demonstrated that suchpersons, for each specific cause used to explain the outcome in aachievement task, tended to experience specific emotional reactionsthat significantly influence the perception of the expectancies of futurebehaviors and outcomes. Since 1978 a significant number of studieshave been conducted with thousands of Brazilian subjects along thelines of the concepts developed by Weiner and his associates. Thesestudies dealt with the relations between causal atributions and achievementsituations, the emotional reactions in these situations, futureexpectancies, and the perception of the causal dimensions. Replicationsand extensions of the original studies allowed the verification ofthe initial findings in another culture, the testing of new hypotheses, aswell as a better comprehension of cognitive, motivational and emotionalaspects of the Brazilian subjetcts.
