Creativity and Intelligence in Children:: Related Abilities?

Resumo: Considering the questions that still remain concerning the relationship between creativity and intelligence, this study aimed to investigate these constructs in children. A sample of 90 elementary school students (44 girls and 46 boys) with ages between 7 and 12 years responded to a nonverbal test of cognitive development (Human Figure Drawing Test) and a creativity test (Test of Figural Creativity for Children). Results on the cognitive test showed a significant correlation with the outcome of the creativity test (r=0.47, p<0.01), indicating that, in the present study, creativity and intelligence are related. As expected, creativity and cognitive development were shown to be characteristics that increase according to age. On neither of the tests significant differences between boys and girls were observed.

Diante dos questionamentos que persistem acerca da relação entre criatividade e inteligência, esta pesquisa teve por objetivo investigar esses construtos junto a 90 estudantes do Ensino Fundamental (44 do sexo feminino e 46 do sexo masculino), com idades entre 7 e 12 anos que responderam a um teste não verbal de desenvolvimento cognitivo (Desenho da Figura Humana) e a um teste de criatividade (Teste de Criatividade Figural Infantil). Os resultados demonstraram que o desempenho no teste cognitivo relacionou-se significativamente com o desempenho no teste de criatividade (r=0,471, p≤0,001), de forma que, no presente estudo, criatividade e inteligência se encontram relacionadas. Conforme esperado, criatividade e desenvolvimento cognitivo mostraram-se sensíveis à influência da idade, sendo que a variável gênero não se mostrou significativa.
