Digital transformation and Artificial Intelligence in information services: innovation and perspectives for Information Science in the post-pandemic world

Resumo: At the beginning of the third decade of the 21st century, the digital transformation in the current information scenario is investigated and perspectives for Information Science are analysed. The article aims: to identify the digital informational context in contemporary society; to analyse how digital transformation and Artificial Intelligence (AI) impact on information services. The methodology adopted was theoretical research of descriptive and exploratory nature that seeks in the discussion of literature to respond to the proposed objectives. The results reveal that social practices in the production, distribution, access and use of information mediated by information and communication technologies are diverse. The interaction between individuals and organisations is supported by these technologies for the exchange of data and information. The digital world assumes the main role in the information that is processed, recorded, and communicated. The impact of AI on archives and libraries is a reality, which will increase in the upcoming years. It is concluded that digital technologies and AI bring new challenges to information professionals.

El artículo pretende: identificar el contexto informativo digital en la sociedad contemporánea; analizar cómo la transformación digital y la Inteligencia Artificial (IA) impactan en los servicios de información. La metodología comprende una investigación teórica de carácter descriptivo y exploratorio que busca en la discusión de la literatura responder a los objetivos propuestos. Los resultados revelan que las prácticas sociales de producción, distribución, acceso y uso de la información mediada por las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación son diversas. La interacción entre individuos y organizaciones se apoya en estas tecnologías para el intercambio de datos e información. El mundo digital asume el papel principal en la información que es procesada, almacenada y comunicada. El impacto de la IA en los archivos y las bibliotecas es una realidad, que se incrementará en los próximos años. Se concluye que las tecnologías digitales y la IA plantean nuevos retos a los profesionales de la información.No início da terceira década do século XXI investiga-se a transformação digital no cenário informacional atual e analisam-se perspetivas para a Ciência da Informação. O artigo tem por objetivos: identificar o contexto informacional digital na sociedade contemporânea; analisar como a transformação digital e a Inteligência Artificial (IA) impactam nos serviços de informação. A metodologia adotada compreende a pesquisa teórica de caráter descritivo e exploratório que busca na discussão da literatura responder aos objetivos propostos. Os resultados revelam que as práticas sociais na produção, distribuição, acesso e uso da informação mediada pelas tecnologias de informação e comunicação são diversas. A interação entre indivíduos e organizações é suportada pelas referidas tecnologias para a troca de dados e informação. O mundo digital assume um papel preponderante na informação que é processada, armazenada e comunicada. O impacto da IA nos arquivos e nas bibliotecas é uma realidade, que será incrementada nos próximos anos.
