Resumo: Social scientists have explained the increasing popularity of esoteric practices in the last decades as a reaction to the preponderance of instrumental rationality in modern industrialized societies. Many scientists consider this development as a return to magic and irrational ways of thinking and acting, which are not able to produce predictable results. In this article we will present anthropological investigations of traditional magic rituals, and psychological and social-scientific interpretations of esoteric practices which suggest a different view: traditional magic and esoteric methods are based, on the one hand, on symbolic actions which direct the human mind towards certain direction and thus, under certain circumstances, are able to produce the desired effect. On the other hand, esoteric techniques make use of exstasis and body-control techniques by means of which particular psychic energies can be provoked. In the concluding section we will discuss the use of esoteric methods by the New Age movement. We will argue that both principles of esotericism, symbols and symbolic actions, and techniques of ecstasy and control of bodyfunctions, can have positive effects on the human mind and body, if the respective techniques are applied in a proper way.

Plusieurs chercheurs estiment que ce développement constitue un retour à la magie et à des façons irrationnelles d’agir et de penser qui ne peuvent avoir que des conséquences imprévisibles. Dans cet article, nous adoptons un point de vue different. Nous présentons des études anthropologiques de certains ri fuels magiques traditionnels et discutirons des interprétations psychologiques et socio-scientifiques des pratiques ésotériques. Ces analyses proposent, d’une part, que la magie traditionnelle et les méthodes ésotériques sont basées sur des actes symboliques qui orientent I ’esprit humain dans une direction déterminée et ainsi, dans certaines circonstances, sont capables de produire l 'effet désiré. D ’autre part, ils décrivent comment les méthodes ésotériques utilisent I’extase et les techniques de controle du corps pour stimuler des énergies psychiques particulières. En conclusion, nous discutons les I 'utilisation des méthodes ésotériques par le mouvement du Nouvel Age. Nous suggérons que les deux príncipes de l ’ésotérisme, les symboles et les actes symboliques, et les techniques d ’extase et de controle desfonctions corporelles, peuvent produire des effets positifs sur le corps et I ’esprit humain si les méthodes sont utilisées correctement.Muitos cientistas sociais têm explicado a crescente popularidade das práticas esotéricas como uma reação à preponderância da racionalidade instrumental nas sociedades modernas industrializadas. Vários deles consideram o movimento esotérico como um retorno aos modos de pensamento e de ação mágicos e irracionais, que não seriam capazes de produzir resultados previsíveis. Neste artigo, apresentamos investigações antropológicas dos rituais de magia tradicional e interpretações psicológicas das práticas esotéricas, as quais sugerem uma visão diferente destas práticas. Por um lado, a magia tradicional e os métodos esotéricos são baseados em ações simbólicas que direcionam a mente humana em uma certa direção e, assim, em certas circunstâncias, são capazes de produzir os efeitos desejados. Por outro lado, as técnicas esotéricas fazem uso do êxtase e de técnicas de contro le do corpo por meio das quais energias psíquicas particulares podem ser provocadas.
