Resumo: The article retraces the history of Brazilian Sociology and proposes a line of analysis of its present situation. Indicating its strengths and weaknesses, the author suggests that the main problems of sociology in Brazil are not internal to the discipline, but rather represent responses to external factors of economic, social and political order. On the other hand, the development of this discipline in Brazil in the last two decades despite those external factors points to its present strengths and its potential.

Indicant ses forces et ses fragilités, I’auteur suggère que les problèmes principaux ne sont pas internes à la sociologie mê- me, mais représentant des réponses aux facteurs externes d’ordre économique, social et politique. Par contre, le développement de la discipline au cours des vingt dernières anées malgré ces facteurs externes indique, sous plusieurs aspects, ses forces actuelles et son potentiel.O artigo retrata a história da Sociologia brasileira, visando a uma análise da situação atual da disciplina. Apontando suas forças e fragilidades, sugere que os principais problemas não são internos à Sociologia e, sim, respondem a fatores externos de ordem econômica, social e política.
