Sources of agricultural production growth in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul between 2006 and 2017

Resumo: This article aimed to identify the sources of growth of the main agricultural crops in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul from 2006 to 2017. The analysis was carried out using the shift-share method, also known as structural-differential. The explanatory factors of the evolution of the production were the area, yield and geographical location effects. The changes in cultivated area were subdivided into scale and substitution effects. The results show that the agricultural sector of Mato Grosso do Sul is heavily dependent on soybean, corn and sugar cane crops. They also show that among the explanatory factors, the most highlighted one was the scale effect, it was positive over the whole period and sub periods analyzed. Finally, we concluded that the production increased more due to the expansion of the cultivated area than by productivity gains. It evidences the existence of a less dynamic agricultural sector in the state. Keywords: Temporary crops. Productive dynamics. Shift-share.

El análisis se realizó utilizando el modelo shift-share, también conocido como estructural-diferencial. Los factores explicativos de la evolución de la producción fueron los efectos de área, rendimiento y ubicación geográfica. Las alteraciones en el área cultivada se subdividieron en efectos escala y sustitución. Los resultados muestran que el sector agrícola de Mato Grosso do Sul depende en gran medida de los cultivos de soja, maíz y caña de azúcar. También muestran que, entre los factores explicativos, lo que más se destacó fue el efecto escala, positivo a lo largo del período y subperíodos analizados. Finalmente, se concluye que el aumento de la producción se debió más a la expansión del área cultivada que por el aumento de la productividad, evidenciando la existencia de un sector agrícola poco dinámico en el estado. Shift-share.Este artigo objetivou identificar as fontes de crescimento das principais culturas agrícolas no estado de Mato Grosso do Sul no período de 2006 a 2017. A análise foi realizada por meio do modelo shift-share, também conhecido como estrutural-diferencial. Os fatores explicativos da evolução da produção foram os efeitos área, rendimento e localização geográfica. As alterações na área cultivada foram subdivididas em efeito escala e substituição. Os resultados mostram que o setor agrícola sul-mato-grossense é muito dependente das culturas da soja, milho e cana-de-açúcar. Mostram também que, entre os fatores explicativos, o que mais se destacou foi o efeito escala, positivo em todo o período e subperíodos analisados. Por fim, conclui-se que o aumento da produção se deu mais em decorrência da expansão da área cultivada do que por ganhos de produtividade, evidenciando-se a existência de um setor agrícola pouco dinâmico no estado.
