Wage inequalities for people with disabilities: macroregional aspects and the paranaense labor market

This article aims to identify the wage inequalities caused by disability in Brazilian regions and investigate the discriminatory impact of disabilities on the income of workers in Paraná. Using microdata from the 2010 Demographic Census, Mincer equations were estimated with correction for sample selection bias and the Oaxaca-Blinder wage decomposition for workers with and without disabilities in the state of Paraná. The data identified a higher proportion of employed workers with disabilities, lower wages, and greater wage differences in the North and Northeast while in the Southeast and South the opposite is observed. Specifically, in Paraná, workers with disabilities have low occupation, the majority are older individuals, men, whites, heads of households, inserted in the private sector and less educated. The counterfactual wage decomposition pointed to an unfavorable wage gap for workers with disabilities, whose most striking effects are for people with visual and physical disabilities. The presence of income discrimination against individuals with disabilities in the Paraná labor market was confirmed, with the discriminatory effect being superior to the effect explained by productive and non-productive personal characteristics.
