Conventional horticulture in Arapiraca-AL: Characterization of pesticide use

Resumo: ABSTRACT: The indiscriminate use of agrotoxic is a serious environmental and public health problem. The objective of this study was to characterize the practices of agrotoxic use in horticulture, as well as the profile of horticulturists in the municipality of Arapiraca-AL. Semi-structured interviews were realized between March and May 2019 on 25 properties located in four rural district. Data frequency analysis was been performed in Microsoft Excel for Windows®. Results observed were: 40% of horticulturists were between 20 and 29 years old; 48% had incomplete elementary school; 50.62% of the most cultivated vegetables were lettuce (Lactuta sativa L.), coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) and sweet pepper (Capsicum annum L.); the main agrotoxic used were Roundup®, Amistar Top® and Premio®; 56% of respondents used agrotoxics weekly; 88% of horticulturists used individual protective equipment during the application of agrotoxic; 12% of horticulturists show some symptoms after applying for agrotoxic, etc. Although most horticulturists are aware of some risks from agrotoxic use and use the IPE, it is worrying that these workers use agrotoxic not recommended for the types of crops. Finally, the results can help the competent public agencies in the elaboration of effective methods to improve horticultural productivity in the Arapiraca region. O objetivo desse estudo foi caracterizar as práticas de uso de agrotóxicos na horticultura, bem como o perfil dos horticultores do município de Arapiraca-AL. Foram realizadas entrevistas semiestruturadas, entre março e maio de 2019, em 25 propriedades, localizadas em quatro povoados da zona rural. A análise de frequência dos dados foi efetuada no Microsoft Excel for Windows®. Alguns resultados observados foram: 40% dos horticultores eram da faixa entre 20 e 29 anos; 48% possuíam o ensino fundamental incompleto; 50,62% das hortaliças mais cultivadas foram alface (Lactuta sativa L.), coentro (Coriandrum sativum L.) e pimentão (Capsicum annum L.); os principais agrotóxicos utilizados foram o Roundup®, o Amistar Top® e o Premio®; 56% dos entrevistados utilizavam agrotóxicos, semanalmente; 88% dos horticultores utilizavam equipamentos de proteção individual durante a aplicação dos agrotóxicos; 12% dos horticultores informaram apresentar alguns sintomas, após a aplicação dos agrotóxicos, etc. Embora a maioria dos horticultores esteja ciente de alguns riscos provenientes do uso de agrotóxicos e utilizarem, em sua maioria, EPI’s, torna-se preocupante o fato desses trabalhadores utilizarem agrotóxicos não recomendados aos tipos de cultivos. Por fim, os resultados alcançados podem auxiliar os órgãos públicos competentes na elaboração de métodos eficazes para melhorias na produtividade da horticultura da região de Arapiraca.
