Resumo: The aim of this article, which is part of the research of a master’s thesis, is to reflect on the implications of the news of deafness in the family and its impact on parents. It will be discussed the issue of diagnosis for the family, the news of disability, the reaction of parents and family members, the forms of care, the expectations of parents in relation to the use of sign language, and the insertion of themselves in this form of communication. The experience report of one of the authors will serve as a basis for understanding the impact that the news of deafness has on families and for a reflection on the phases faced by parents from the news of deafness of their child.

Se abordará el tema del diagnóstico para la familia, la noticia de la discapacidad, la reacción de los padres y familiares, las formas de atención, las expectativas de los padres con respecto al uso de la lengua de señas y su inserción en esta forma de comunicación. El relato de experiencia de una de las autoras (María Isabel) servirá de base para comprender el impacto que tiene la noticia de la sordera en las familias y para reflexionar sobre las fases a las que se enfrentan los padres tras la noticia de la sordera de su hijo.O objetivo deste artigo, que é parte da pesquisa de uma dissertação de mestrado, é fazer uma reflexão sobre as implicações da notícia da surdez na família e o impacto desta sobre os pais. Serão abordadas a questão do diagnóstico para a família, a notícia da deficiência, a reação dos pais e familiares, as formas de atendimento, as expectativas dos pais em relação ao uso da língua de sinais e à inserção deles próprios nessa forma de comunicação.
