Nature and fiction in artistic imitation: considerations from Aristotle

Resumo: | This article addresses the topic of artistic mímēsis, and attempts to illuminate the contemporary discussion between two seemingly irreconcilable positions. The first, framed in a traditional interpretation of Aristotelian texts, considers the work of art as an imitation of nature, finding in it its only rule. The second, supported by a different interpretation, states that, according to Aristotle himself, artistic creativity is fictional, that is, independent of natural reality, and therefore debtor only of the artist’s subjectivity. However, when considering the analogy between téchnē and phýsis, within Aristotle’s teleological worldview, it is possible to notice a kind of "common work" that harmonizes them. In this context, and advancing on the consideration of the mimetic poiésis, the philosopher’s texts allow an interpretation that, without detaching itself from the original naturalness of art and taking it as a guide, opens the horizon to the artist’s creativity. |

La primera, enmarcada en una tradicional interpretación de los textos aristotélicos, considera a la obra de arte como una imitación de la naturaleza, encontrando en ella su única regla. La segunda, apoyada en una interpretación distinta, enuncia que, según el mismo Aristóteles, la creatividad artística es ficcional, es decir, independiente de la realidad natural, y por ende deudora sólo de la subjetividad del artista. Sin embargo, al considerar la analogía entre téchnē y phýsis, dentro de la cosmovisión teleológica de Aristóteles, es posible advertir una suerte de “obra común” que las armoniza. En ese marco, y avanzando sobre la consideración de la poiésis mimética, los textos del filósofo permiten una interpretación que, sin despegarse de la naturalidad originaria del arte y tomándola como guía, abre el horizonte a la creatividad del artista.Os autores tratam da questão da mímesis artística, buscando iluminar a discussão contemporânea entre duas posições aparentemente inconciliáveis. A primeira, enquadrada numa interpretação tradicional dos textos aristotélicos, concebe a obra de arte como uma imitação da natureza, encontrando nela a sua única regra. A segunda, amparada em outra interpretação, afirma que, segundo o próprio Aristóteles, a criatividade artística é ficcional, ou seja, independente da realidade natural e, portanto, devedora apenas à subjetividade do artista. Entretanto, ao se ter em vista a analogia entre téchnē e phýsis, dentro da cosmovisão teleológica de Aristóteles, é possível perceber uma espécie de “trabalho comum” que as harmoniza.
