Through analysis of the film’s narrative, characters and carnival songs, this article aims to present a study of the female performances in Garotas e Samba (1957), directed by Carlos Manga. This production belongs to the cinematographic genre known as chanchada, considered a type of musical comedy that was greatly influenced by the circus, carnival, radio, variety shows and foreign movies. The carnival presented in the film is that of the radio songs – mainly the carnival songs, in which it was common to use satire and transposition – and the carnival balls – where short stylized costumes were used, typical of the period. This film shows clearly the upside-down world presented by the chanchadas, since women appear to be much more active in the public space in relation to the actual situation of most women in the 50s. Furthermore, the women’s performances throughout the movie were sometimes conservative and sometimes outlandish, demonstrating the ambiguity of a society in transition.
