TERRITORY, TUTELARY POWERS AND INDIGENOUS AGENCIES: PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS ON TRANSITS, EXCHANGES AND R-EXISTENCES IN THE BRAZIL-FRENCH GUIANA BORDER (1930-1945)

The article analyzes the indigenous dynamics in the border region between Brazil and French Guiana, in Vargas era’s context (1930-1945). Aims to understand their territorial configurations and agencies dealing with the state-owned policies of occupation of the frontier backlands, in the northern Amazon. Using the sources of the Indians Protection Service, it measures the experiences and strategies adopted by the indigenous peoples of the region to reinterpret, and re-signify, the tutelary actions that aimed to discipline and dominate their bodies, minds and cultures. This engendered other forms of group existence among the indigenous, which met the pressures of the surrounding society without causing, however, the loss of their sociopolitical and cosmological complexities. Therefore, the research reveals, still in a preliminary way, the dynamism of this picture of interethnic relations in indigenous Guyana.Keywords: Amazon; borders; territories; interethnic relations; indigenous r-existences.
