Contribution of Information Science research groups to academic education

Resumo: This research aims to understand whether the participation of undergraduates in research groups contributes to enhance the admission of students in graduate programs in Information Science (IC). This is a study with a quanti-qualitative and exploratory-descriptive approach. For data collection a questionnaire was used, which was applied to students from graduate programs in IC, who had participated as members in research groups during their undergraduate studies. For data analysis, content analysis was used, with the establishment of the following categories: a) Activities carried out in the scope of IC research groups; and b) Incentive and contribution of the participation in research groups for entering graduate studies in IS. The data sample is composed of 34 respondents. The results indicate that almost half of the research subjects come from IC graduate programs in the Southeast region, and point out that among the main activities developed in the groups are the participation in debates and discussions about the literature and the organization of events and seminars in the area. In regards to the perception about the contribution of the groups to their academic education, most of the participants affirmed that they had received encouragement from the group leaders to enter graduate studies and that this action happened mostly through dialogue and co-participation in scientific productions. It concludes that, as far as the perspectives exposed by the respondents are concerned, the research groups constitute as spaces of constant encouragement to scientific and social development, and the active participation in these environments contributes, above all, to the academic formation and to the entry into graduate programs.

Se entiende que el intercambio y el compartir el conocimiento a través del diálogo, la producción de comunicaciones y otras acciones realizadas por los grupos de investigación contribuyen al interés de los estudiantes de pregrado en ingresar a los programas de posgrado y pueden favorecer el desarrollo de la ciencia brasileña, especialmente en el contexto de la Ciencia de la Información. En cuanto a la metodología, se trata de una investigación exploratoria y bibliográfica, con un enfoque cuanti-cualitativo. Para la recogida de datos se utilizó un cuestionario, formado por ocho preguntas abiertas y cerradas, aplicado a estudiantes de postgrado de Ciencias de la Información que han participado como miembros en grupos de investigación durante la graduación. Para el análisis de los datos, se utilizó el análisis de contenido, con el establecimiento de las siguientes categorías: a) Perfil de los participantes; b) Actividades realizadas en el ámbito de los Grupos de Investigación en Ciencias de la Información; c) Incentivo y contribución de la participación en los Grupos de Investigación para el ingreso al Postgrado en Ciencias de la Información. La muestra de datos está compuesta por 34 encuestados. Los resultados indican que casi la mitad de los sujetos de investigación provienen de programas de posgrado en Ciencias de la Información de la región Sudeste, y señalan que entre las principales actividades desarrolladas en el grupo están la participación en debates y discusiones sobre la literatura y la organización de eventos y seminarios en el área. En cuanto a la percepción de los encuestados sobre la contribución de los grupos a su formación académica, la mayoría afirma haber recibido estímulo de los líderes de los grupos para entrar en el curso de postgrado y que, en su mayoría, se produjo a través del diálogo y la cooperación en las producciones científicas. La actuación en los Grupos de Investigación, para casi todos los participantes, contribuyó a su entrada en el postgrado, a partir de diferentes actividades e iniciativas desarrolladas en el ámbito del Grupo de Investigación. Se concluye que, en cuanto a las perspectivas expuestas por los encuestados, es posible inferir que los grupos se constituyen como espacios de promoción constante del desarrollo científico y social, y la participación activa en estos ambientes contribuye en gran medida a la formación académica y al ingreso a programas de posgrado.Esta pesquisa objetiva compreender se a participação de graduandos em grupos de pesquisa contribui para potencializar o ingresso de alunos em programas de pós-graduação em Ciência da Informação (CI). Trata-se de estudo com abordagem quanti-qualitativa e de cunho exploratório-descritivo. Para a coleta de dados fez-se uso de questionário, o qual foi aplicado a discentes de programas de pós-graduação em CI, que tenham participado como membros em grupos de pesquisa durante a graduação. Para a análise de dados, empregou-se a análise de conteúdo, com o estabelecimento das seguintes categorias: a) Atividades realizadas no âmbito dos grupos de pesquisa em CI; e b) Incentivo e contribuição da participação em grupos de pesquisa para ingresso na pós-graduação em CI. A amostra de dados é composta por 34 respondentes. Os resultados indicam que quase metade dos sujeitos da pesquisa são oriundos de programas de pós-graduação em CI da região Sudeste, e apontam que entre as principais atividades desenvolvidas nos grupos estão a participação em debates e discussões sobre a literatura e a organização de eventos e seminários da área. No que diz respeito à percepção sobre a contribuição dos grupos para a formação acadêmica, a maioria dos participantes afirma ter recebido incentivo dos líderes do grupo para o ingresso na pós-graduação e que tal ação acontecia, majoritariamente, por meio do diálogo e da coparticipação em produções científicas.
