Resumo: This work is a general approach towards thinking the linguistic prejudice as a mental activity related to the use of language. It reviews the ideas of discrimination and prejudice from the point of view of the use of language. Not all linguistic variation causes linguistic prejudice. However, all kinds of linguistic prejudice emerge from how speakers or groups of people think some rules of the grammar must be used, in order not to cause social discrimination. When language is in use, there is a play whose rules are expected to be attended in speaking, hearing and understanding the communication. It is a cognitive play which supports the social, the cultural and idiosyncratic behaviour by speakers who are discriminated by the way they use the language.

Nem todo tipo de variação acaba causando preconceito linguístico. Porém, todo preconceito linguístico vem da discriminação de certos falantes, suportando como argumentos fatos gramaticais de algum tipo. Na vida da língua, existe um jogo de falar, um jogo de entender e um jogo de se comunicar. Esse jogo conduz a conclusões cognitivas relacionadas à linguagem e ao status dos falantes na sociedade.
