Fear of crime: measuring the phenomenon and exploring its predictors in São Paulo city

Resumo: This paper aims to contribute to theoretical and methodological discussions about the conceptualization, measurement, and identification of predictors of fear of crime in the Brazilian context. Based on survey data collected in São Paulo city in 2015, we worked with a fear of crime construct covering emotional, cognitive and behavioral dimensions. Using Multiple Regressions and Structural Equation Modeling we verify the relation between each one of these components and explanatory variables informed by individual aspects (sociodemographic variables) experiences of victimization (direct and indirect) and contextual aspects (perceptions of disorder and social cohesion). The results highlight the complex and multidetermined nature of the phenomenon studied and support the importance of a broader measurement perspective. The analysis also reveals the influence of predictors such as gender, perceived neighborhood disorder, low social cohesion, indirect victimization, age, education, and socioeconomic status.

Basado en datos de encuestas aplicadas en 2015 en la ciudad de São Paulo, trabajamos el constructo de miedo al crimen que identifica dimensiones emocionales, cognitivas y comportamentales. Por medio de regresiones múltiples y modelos de ecuaciones estructurales, identificamos efectos recíprocos entre las tres dimensiones del miedo al crimen y verificamos la relación entre estas dimensiones con variables explicativas asociadas a características sociodemográficas, experiencias de victimización (directa e indirecta) y variables contextuales (percepciones de desorden y cohesión social). Los resultados destacan la naturaleza compleja y multideterminada del fenómeno estudiado y respaldan la importancia de una perspectiva de medición más amplia. El análisis también revela la influencia de predictores como el sexo, percepción de desorden, baja cohesión social, victimización indirecta, edad, educación y estatus socioeconómicos.O artigo visa contribuir para discussões teóricas e metodológicas sobre a conceitualização, mensuração e identificação de preditores do medo do crime no contexto brasileiro. Com base em dados de survey aplicado em 2015 na cidade de São Paulo, o medo do crime foi trabalhado por meio de dimensões emocionais, cognitivas e comportamentais. Análises de regressões e modelagens de equações estruturais apontaram efeitos recíprocos entre as três dimensões e revelaram suas relações com aspectos individuais (variáveis sociodemográficas), experiências de vitimização (direta e indireta) e contextuais (percepções de desordem e coesão social).
