Audio describing the horror genre: “creating fear in the viewer”

Resumo: | Much research on audio description (AD) has been developed in the field of Translation Studies (FRYER, 2016; ORERO & MATAMALA, 2016). However, there are few bibliographic references regarding AD of the horror genre (MICHALEWICZ, 2015). With the aim of promoting a discussion about the translation of particular characteristics of the horror genre, eight audio describers were interviewed about their experiences with horror AD. Based on thematic analysis adopted as a methodology, nine themes were selected from bibliography on horror in cinema (CHERRY, 2009) and from the answers of the interviewees in order to guide our reflection on the topic: 1) Genre; 2) Effect; 3) Language; 4) Cinematographic Language; 5) Content; 6) Soundtrack; 7) Silence; 8) Voice; and 9) Prosody. According to the interviewees, the horror genre influences the work of the audio describer in many respects. |

According to the interviewees, the horror genre influences the work of the audio describer in many respects.Se han desarrollado muchas investigaciones sobre audiodescripción (EA) en el ámbito de los estudios de traducción (FRYER, 2016; ORERO & MATAMALA, 2016), sin embargo, hay pocas referencias bibliográficas sobre el AD del género de terror (MICHALEWICZ, 2015). Con el fin de promover una discusión sobre la traducción de características particulares del género de terror, se realizaron entrevistas con ocho descriptores de audio sobre su experiencia con el horror AD. El análisis temático fue adoptado como metodología, por lo que se seleccionaron nueve temas a partir de la bibliografía sobre el horror en el cine (CHERRY, 2009) y de las respuestas de los entrevistados para guiar nuestra reflexión: sobre el tema: 1) Género; 2) Efecto; 3) Idioma; 4) lenguaje cinematográfico; 5) Contenido; 6) Banda sonora; 7) Silencio; 8) Voz; y 9) Prosodia. Los datos indican que los entrevistados consideran que el género del producto audiovisual influye en el trabajo del audiodescriptor.Muitas pesquisas sobre audiodescrição (AD) têm sido desenvolvidas no âmbito dos Estudos da Tradução (FRYER, 2016; ORERO & MATAMALA, 2016), entretanto, há poucas referências bibliográficas no que concerne à AD do gênero terror (MICHALEWICZ, 2015). Com vistas a promover uma discussão acerca da tradução de características particulares do gênero terror, foram feitas entrevistas com oito audiodescritores a respeito de sua experiência com AD de terror. Adotou-se como metodologia a análise temática, de modo que nove temas foram selecionados com base em bibliografia sobre horror no cinema (CHERRY, 2009) e nas respostas dos entrevistados para nortearem nossa reflexão: sobre o assunto: 1) Gênero; 2) Efeito; 3) Linguagem; 4) Linguagem Cinematográfica; 5) Conteúdo; 6) Trilha Sonora; 7) Silêncio; 8) Voz; e 9) Prosódia. Os dados indicam que os entrevistados consideram que o gênero do produto audiovisual influencia o trabalho do audiodescritor.
