Metalinguistic awareness in the light of THAM2: some results

Resumo: Many authors define metalinguistic awareness as the ability to consciously and intentionally reflect and analyze the structural components of Language. For less informed readers, it can be conceptualized as the ability to understand and reveal understanding of what is read. This ability is of undeniable importance for all human tasks. We consider the need to evaluate, analyze and promote it, intervening. In Portugal, there are almost no valid resources in this domain. We ventured on this path, presenting the THAM2 (resource of Italian origin and already in the process of being measured, adapted to European Portuguese, oriented to boys aged 9-14 years), and some results obtained (27 Portuguese subjects, with 9 years old). Although scarce, the results are quite promising. The linguistic component of THAM2 was more easily completed by the subjects in the sample, when compared to the metalinguistic component. The participants adhered well to the task, although it was too long. In this context, the THAM2, although in need of further study and possible adjustments, appears to be a reliable measure of metalinguistic awareness, providing an in-depth assessment of several well-defined constructs, based on tasks that differ in their complexity and difficulty. The diversity of metalinguistic abilities assessed could be an advantage of using the instrument in research on the subject and its relationship with learning to read and write.

Para los lectores menos informados, puede conceptualizarse como la capacidad de comprender y revelar la comprensión de lo que se lee. Esta habilidad es de innegable importancia para todas las tareas humanas. Consideramos la necesidad de evaluarlo, analizarlo y promoverlo, interviniendo. En Portugal, casi no hay recursos válidos en este dominio. Nos aventuramos en este camino, presentando el THAM2 (recurso de origen italiano y ya en proceso de medición, adaptado al portugués europeo, orientado a niños de 9 a 14 años), y algunos resultados obtenidos (27 sujetos portugueses, con 9 años viejo). Aunque escasos, los resultados son bastante prometedores.Muitos autores definem consciência metalinguística enquanto a capacidade de refletir e analisar de forma consciente e intencional os componentes estruturais da linguagem. Para leitores menos avisados, pode ser concetualizada como a capacidade de compreender e revelar a compreensão do que é lido, observado. Esta capacidade, a compreensão, é de inegável importância para todas as tarefas do humano. Consideramos a necessidade de a avaliar, analisar e promover, intervindo. Em Portugal não existem recursos válidos neste domínio. Apresentamos o THAM2 (recurso de origem italiana e já em processo de aferição em Portugal, orientado para meninos(as) dos 9-14 anos de idade), e alguns resultados obtidos (27 sujeitos portugueses, com 9 anos de idade). Embora escassos, os resultados são bastante promissores: a componente linguística do THAM2 foi realizada com maior facilidade por parte dos participantes da amostra, quando comparada com a componente metalinguística. Os intervenientes aderem bem à tarefa, embora demasiado longa. Neste contexto, o THAM2, embora com necessidade de mais estudos e eventuais ajustes, apresenta-se como uma medida fiável da consciência metalinguística, fazendo uma avaliação aprofundada de vários constructos bem definidos, a partir de tarefas que diferem na sua complexidade e dificuldade.
