The role of industry in the industrial heritage

Resumo: This article highlights how the effects of the process of de-industrialization and economic restructuring, intensified in the 1990s, reached large industrial areas which were major economic engines and the main inducers of urban development. Although these areas have brought to the place unmistakable character and identity, and organized urban dynamics and social relations, its place is threatened to disappear. Therefore, this article discusses the potential and uniqueness of industrial heritage in the production of contemporary place and its evaluation as Cultural Heritage in Brazil, from initiatives undertaken by IPHAN – Institute for National Artistic and Historical Heritage. It highlights how, despite the relatively small representation of the industrial heritage in the outstanding sites listed by IPHAN, these buildings are changing perceptions of the public towards the important aspect of their history, and be able to attract its proper valuation as representatives of the Brazilian social and cultural expression.
