Time series of students in special diets linked to the National School Food Program of Macaé City, Rio de Janeiro: temporal trend of students on special diets

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of pathologies and the time series of students on special diets (DE) enrolled in the National School Feeding Program (PNAE) in the city of Macaé/RJ, in the octennium 2013-2020. This is a descriptive, secondary-based study, with data obtained from annual reports made available by the Coordination of School Feeding of the Municipal Education Department of Macaé, containing information on all DE students enrolled in the basic education system. In the last eight years, there were 303,645 consultations carried out by the PNAE, of which 3,310 students (10.9/1,000 students) received DE. There was a growing trend of ED students in the period analysed (2013: 5/1,000 vs. 2020: 15.1/1,000), with emphasis on Allergy to Cow's Milk Protein (2013: 35.5% vs. 2020: 42.2%) and Lactose Intolerance (2013: 34.3% vs. 2020: 12.7%). Lactose Restriction (2013: 9.3% vs. 2020: 14.5%), Fruit Restriction (2013: 4.7% vs. 2020: 10.1%) and Oilseed Restriction (2013: 0.6 % vs. 2020: 6.0%) were the most frequent dietary restrictions. In addition, there was an increasing trend over the years evaluated for Oilseed Restriction (β1 = 0.094, p-value = 0.001) and Fruit Restriction (β1 = 0.099, p-value = 0.001). It is concluded that there is an increasing prevalence of pathologies and dietary restrictions, as well as a temporal trend of increase in ED students.
