Resumo: In the research line of the Oral History and Mathematics Education Group that investigates school textbooks ofMathematics as symbolic forms, this article examines the approach of complex numbers in the “Matemática 2.ºciclo” Collection, as well as the transformations and adaptations in this approach throughout the five editionspublished between 1944 and 1956. Among the results discussed, it is emphasized that: the work was produced ata time when High school was almost exclusively aimed at the elites of the country; and its approach to complexnumbers is linked to a process of reconceptualization of the notion of number, from the study of the solutions ofequations of the third degree, occurred in Mathematics in the early nineteenth century.
