The languages of the press: a look at the Brazilian Statistical Yearbooks (1908-1955)

Resumo: This paper looks at the languages of Brazilian press registered in the Brazilian´s Statistical Yearbooks (BEYs) from the first half of the 20th century. For this purpose, it analyses 16 statistical yearbooks, between 1908 and 1955, and interprets his data in the light of the language policy of that time, as well as the relationship between press in Foreign Language (FL), immigrant communities and State. The results show that the subject “languages of the press” received great attention on the first BEY, which declined in subsequent publications until its omission during the Estado Novo. In statistical terms, press in FL corresponded to 5% of the total on 1912, reaching less than 1% in the following decades while the bilingual press expanded. The fight against press in FL and actions to nationalization of migrants are related to these data.
