The Brazilian government's readership program : linguistic ideologies and teaching practices in a context situated

Resumo: The Lecturership Programme of the Brazilian government selects Portuguese language lecturers to work in foreign institutions of higher education teaching Portuguese language and promoting Brazilian culture. The first objective of this article is to outline the recent political and institutional configuration of the Programme, considering a given hegemonic model of nation and its role in building expectations around the performance of the lector. The second objective is to report my experience as a lecturer in South Africa between 2015 and 2017, pointing out tensions that emerged around such model in teaching practices in this specific context. In the end, I discuss how this experience indicates the necessity for the lecturer to search for alternative ways of building teaching practices that may be more sensitive to the experiences of mobility and transnationality lived by students in different contexts.

El primer objetivo de este artículo es describir la configuración política e institucional reciente del Programa, considerando un modelo hegemónico dado de nación y su papel en la construcción de expectativas en torno al desempeño del lector. El segundo objetivo es informar mi experiencia como profesor en Sudáfrica entre 2015 y 2017, señalando las tensiones que surgieron en torno a dicho modelo en las prácticas de enseñanza en este contexto específico. Al final, analizo cómo esta experiencia indica la necesidad de que el profesor busque formas alternativas de construir prácticas de enseñanza que puedan ser más sensibles a las experiencias de movilidad y transnacionalidad que viven los estudiantes en diferentes contextos.O Programa Leitorado do governo brasileiro seleciona professores para atuar em instituições estrangeiras de ensino superior ensinando a língua portuguesa e promovendo a cultura brasileira. O primeiro objetivo deste artigo é delinear a configuração política e institucional recente do Programa Leitorado a partir de um determinado modelo hegemônico de nação e o seu papel na construção de expectativas em torno da atuação do leitor. O segundo objetivo é relatar minha experiência como leitor na África do Sul entre 2015 e 2017, apontando tensões em torno desse modelo nas práticas de ensino em um contexto específico de atuação.
