The word ethnicity: to name the other, origin and functioning of the term ethnicity in the French discursive universe

Resumo: This article shows how the words “ethnie” and “ethnique”(as well as prefixed expressions such as “multi-ethnique”, “inter-ethnique”, etc.) function in the discursive universe of French as “negative hetero-designators”: they refer always to “others” and do so negatively, i.e. as outsiders to the valorized political system of citizenship and of the relationship to a State. An exploration of the trajectory of the word “ethnie” (which replaces “race” in a way perceived as euphemistic) and of its Greek and Latinorigins (where “ethnic” designates the outsider to the city-state, and then the pagan) throws light on the historical consistency of this functioning.

Uno exploración de la trayectoria del término "etnia" (que reemplaza "raza", de percibido como eufemístico) y sus orígenes griegos y latinos (dondelo étnico es el extranjero a la Ciudad y luego el pagano) aclara la constancia de esta operación.Este artigo mostra como as palavra ‘ethnie’ [etnia] e ‘ethnique’ [étnico(a)] (assim como as prefixadas ‘multi-ethnique’ [multi-étnico(a)], ‘inter-ethnique’ [inter-étnico(a)]...) funcionam no universo discursivo francês contemporâneo como hetero-designantes negativos: elas nomeiam sempre os outros, e negativamente, isto é, enquanto estrangeiros ao sistema político valorizado da cidadania e da relação com um Estado.
