Editorial - One hundred years of Paulo Freire: material culture, education and freedom

Resumo: In the year of the centenary of educator Paulo Freire, we invite all archeologists and specialists in the themes of heritage, memory and education to collaborate with the construction of reflections on the relationship between Education and Material Culture, promoted in school environments or not, as practices of freedom . Paulo Freire was received as subversive by some sectors of society throughout his life as an educator and, even today, he is rejected by certain fields of power. What in his work and in our practices can make education so dangerous? What is the potential of shared education linked to material culture? Would education as a practice of freedom be able to break the existence of the “simple man crushed, diminished and accommodated (...) tragically frightened, fearing authentic coexistence and even doubting its possibility” (Freire, 1967: 44)? Would it be able to expose society as a means to unravel it and allow an active and active understanding of the political and historical contexts in which we operate (Freire, 1986: 15/17)? Education as a practice of freedom remains a current and urgent issue. At the end of the dossier, we can openly state that the thematic proposal was well received by archaeologists, educators, historians, public administrators, among other specialists in the field of memory, heritage and material culture. In total, eleven texts were approved, including articles, an interview and an unpublished translation of an interview given by Paulo Freire, in Geneva, in 1970. In common, the texts have active reflection on material culture, education and freedom. The theme is provocative, and, of course, serves as a platform for building new dialogues and action practices. In this edition, therefore, you will find the following structure:

Paulo Freire fue recibido como subversivo por algunos sectores de la sociedad a lo largo de su vida como educador y, aún hoy, es rechazado por ciertos campos de poder. ¿Qué en su trabajo y en nuestras prácticas puede hacer que la educación sea tan peligrosa? ¿Cuál es el potencial de la educación compartida vinculada a la cultura material? ¿La educación como práctica de la libertad podría romper la existencia del “hombre sencillo aplastado, disminuido y acomodado (...) trágicamente asustado, temiendo la auténtica convivencia y dudando incluso de su posibilidad” (Freire, 1967: 44)? ¿Sería capaz de exponer a la sociedad como un medio para desenredarla y permitir una comprensión activa y activa de los contextos políticos e históricos en los que operamos (Freire, 1986: 15/17)? La educación como práctica de la libertad sigue siendo un tema actual y urgente.Al final del dossier, podemos afirmar abiertamente que la propuesta temática fue bien recibida por arqueólogos, educadores, historiadores, administradores públicos, entre otros especialistas en el campo de la memoria, el patrimonio y la cultura material. En total, se aprobaron once textos, entre artículos, una entrevista y una traducción inédita de una entrevista concedida por Paulo Freire, en Ginebra, en 1970. En común, los textos tienen una reflexión activa sobre la cultura material, la educación y la libertad. El tema es provocativo y, por supuesto, sirve como plataforma para construir nuevos diálogos y prácticas de acción. En esta edición, por tanto, encontrará la siguiente estructura:No ano do centenário do educador Paulo Freire convidamos a todos arqueólogos e especialistas nas temáticas do patrimônio, memória e educação a colaborar com a construção de reflexões sobre as relações entre a Educação e Cultura Material, promovidas em ambientes escolares ou não, como práticas de liberdade. Paulo Freire foi recebido como subversivo por alguns setores da sociedade ao longo de toda sua vida como educador e, ainda nos dias de hoje, é rejeitado por determinados campos de poder.  O que em sua obra e em nossas práticas pode tornar a educação tão perigosa? Qual o potencial de uma educação partilhada atrelada à cultura material?  A educação como prática da liberdade seria capaz de romper a existência do “homem simples esmagado, diminuído e acomodado (...) tragicamente assustado, temendo a convivência autêntica e até duvidando de sua possibilidade” (Freire, 1967: 44)? Seria capaz de desnudar a sociedade como meio para desvendá-la e permitir uma compreensão ativa e atuante sobre os contextos políticos e históricos no qual nos inserimos (Freire, 1986: 15/17)? A educação como prática da liberdade mantém-se como um tema atual e urgente. Finalizando o dossiê, podemos abertamente afirmar que a proposta temática foi bem recebida pelos arqueólogos, educadores, historiadores, gestores públicos, entre outros especialistas no campo da memória, patrimônio e cultura material. No total, foram aprovados onze textos, entre artigos, entrevista e uma tradução inédita de uma entrevista dada por Paulo Freire, em Geneva, no ano de 1970. Em comum, os textos trazem como eixo central a reflexão ativa sobre cultura material, educação e liberdade. A temática é provocadora, e, claro, serve como uma plataforma para a construção de novos diálogos e práticas de ação.
