The “bernarda” of Francisco Ignacio: from historiographical disputes to representations in the Paulista Museum: das disputas historiográficas às representações no Museu Paulista

The article proposes the analysis of the “bernarda” of Francisco Ignacio, that occurred in São Paulo between May and September 1822, and its implications in the process of Brazil's independence. Based on the examination of the appropriations made by historians in nineteenth-century texts, as well as the historiographic disputes around the episode in the transition to the twentieth century, in the context of the affirmation of the Paulista identity on the national scene, we will discuss the forms of representation of bernarda and his characters in the exhibition rooms of the Paulista Museum, highlighting the efforts of Afonso d'Escragnolle Taunay to impose the protagonism of São Paulo and the Paulistas in the birth of Brazil and its independence.
