Resumo: In recent decades, there has been an increase in industrial production and this is due to the increase in population and their consumption habits. As a consequence of this, it resulted in a greater generation of residues coming from the industries. One of the main problems is when these residues, such as plant biomass ashes, are discarded and accumulated in inappropriate and places, thus affecting the environment. Therefore, it becomes necessary to find alternatives that can reduce this problem. For this reason the objective of this paper was to evaluate the growth of the lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) crop under the application of different doses of vegetable ash. Lettuce seedlings were transplanted in beds in an arc-tube greenhouse, with four treatments and five replications being set up in a completely randomized design. The treatments proposed for this experiment were: 0 Kg/ 0.90 m2 (control); 1.5 kg/ 0.90 m2; 3 kg/ 0.90 m2 and 6 kg/ 0.90 m2. After harvest, some physiological parameters of the plants were evaluated, such as fresh and dry mass of the root, commercial and non-commercial aerial part; stem diameter and height and root length. The pH and soil nutrient availability in the control of the different treatments tested were also evaluated. With this paper it was possible to check that the vegetable ash mixed with the soil constitutes an important organic fertilizer in the production of lettuce. The plant biomass ash applied on the crop at a dosage of 1.5 Kg/0.90m2 was the one that provided better results in relation to the development and physiological parameters of the plants as well as in the soil quality indexes under study as the correction of the acidity of the soil by raising the pH level; increase in CTC and SB; reduction of Al3+ contents and increased availability of macro and micronutrients.
