Resumo: Implant-supported rehabilitation performed in individuals with bruxism increases the possibility of treatment failure due to occlusal overload. Bruxism is one of the causes of temporomandibular disorders, failure of dental restorations and tooth wear and can be considered a contraindication for dental implants. Therefore, this study aimed to review the literature regarding the impact of bruxism on implant prostheses and the peri-implant region. A bibliographic search was carried out in the PubMed, Medline, Google Academic and Scielo databases, using the time frame from 2000 to 2020. The keywords “bruxism”, “dental implants”, “implant-supported prosthesis”, “bruxism” were used ”, “dental implants”, “implant-supported prosthesis”. It was found that bruxism alone does not cause implant failures, however, the occlusal overload generated by this condition can cause implant damage. It is concluded that extra care is needed during the planning and maintenance of implants in patients with bruxism.

O bruxismo é uma das causas de disfunções temporomandibulares, falha de restaurações dentárias e desgaste dos dentes e pode ser considerado uma contraindicação para implantes dentários. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo revisar a literatura a respeito do impacto do bruxismo em próteses sobre implante e região peri-implantar. Realizou-se uma pesquisa bibliográfica na língua portuguesa e inglesa nas bases de dados PubMed, Medline, Google Acadêmico e Scielo, utilizando o recorte temporal 2000 a 2020. Utilizou-se as palavras-chave “bruxismo”, “implantes dentários”, “prótese implantossuportada”, “bruxism”, “dental implants”, “implant-supported prosthesis”. Verificou-se que o bruxismo de forma isolada não causa falhas nos implantes, entretanto a sobrecarga oclusal gerada por essa condição pode causar avarias nos implantes.
