Chemical Engineering Laboratory teaching using Project-based learning approach: gas adsorption using banana peel

Resumo: | This project was developed as an active learning practice, where Chemical Engineering students, during the Unit Engineering Laboratory course, implemented a Humanitarian Action project, proposing a sustainable response to problems in poor countries through equipment studied in this course. Motivated by the gasoline release tragically occurred in Bogotá, it was proposed to purify the contaminated water by gasoline using adsorption, using a biosorbent with good adsorption efficiency and low cost. The adsorbent used in this work was banana peel, which is an abundant fruit in the country. Thus, in order to evaluate the biomass adsorption capacity, it was obtained the equilibrium isotherm, the adsorption kinetics and the fixed bed column dynamics, constructed from PET bottle. It was possible to adsorb about 1.91 g of gasoline/g of biomass. So, this operation can be a low-cost alternative for the recovery of contaminated aquifers. In addition to the technical report, the students also made an explanatory video in English, to disseminate the knowledge produced to other countries. The students reported that this practice was interdisciplinary, sustainable and technological, developing many competencies and skills necessary for the engineering career. |

Motivado por los derrames de gasolina que ocurrieron en Bogotá, se propuso purificar el agua contaminada con gasolina por adsorción usando biomassa, que presenta una buena eficiencia de separación y bajo costo. El adsorbente fue la cáscara de plátano, que es una fruta abundante en el país. Por lo tanto, para evaluar la actividad del adsorbente en la eliminación de gasolina, se estudió la isoterma de equilibrio, la cinética de adsorción y la dinámica de la columna de lecho fijo, construida a partir de una botella de PET. Los resultados mostraron que era posible adsorber alrededor de 1,91 g de gasolina / g de biomasa y que esta operación puede ser una alternativa de bajo costo para la recuperación de acuíferos contaminados. Además del trabajo técnico-científico, se generó un video explicativo en inglés, para difundir el conocimiento producido a otros países. Los estudiantes informaron que el trabajo fue interdisciplinario, sostenible y tecnológico, desarrollando diversas competencias y habilidades necesarias para la profesión de ingeniería.Este projeto foi desenvolvido como uma metodologia ativa de ensino, em que alunos da disciplina de Laboratório de Operações Unitárias da Engenharia Química implementaram um projeto de Ação Humanitária, propondo uma resposta sustentável a problemas de países pobres, usando equipamentos estudados na disciplina. Motivados pelos derramamentos de gasolina tragicamente ocorridos em Bogotá, propôs-se a purificação da água contaminada por gasolina por adsorção com biomassa, que apresenta boa eficiência de adsorção e possui baixo custo. O adsorvente utilizado neste trabalho foi a casca de banana, que é uma fruta abundante no país. Assim, com o objetivo de avaliar a atividade do adsorvente na remoção de gasolina, foram estudadas a isoterma de equilíbrio, a cinética da adsorção e a dinâmica da coluna de leito fixo, construída de garrafa PET. Foi possível adsorver cerca de 1,91 g de gasolina/g da biomassa, assim esta operação pode ser uma alternativa de baixo custo para a recuperação de aquíferos contaminados. Além do trabalho técnico-científico, foi gerado um vídeo explicativo em inglês, para difundir o conhecimento produzido a outros países.
