Antioxidant capacity and Phytochemical characterization of Mimosa caesalpiniaefolia

Resumo: The use of medicinal plants to treat health problems has been going on since ancient times and remains very current. The barks of Mimosa caesalpiniifolia, popularly known as “sabiá”, are used in home medicine for healing, bronchitis, among others. The objective of the present study was to qualitatively and quantitatively evaluate the secondary metabolites present and the antioxidant activity of leaf, twig and bark extracts of Mimosa caesalpiniifolia in different solvents. The presence of several metabolites was verified, among them: phenols, anthocyanins, steroids and catechins. In addition, high concentrations of tannins were found in its leaves (1471 mg/L). Extracts also showed great antioxidant activities for the two methods of radicals used. The ethanolic extract of the branches (7.08 mg/L) and the aqueous extracts of the barks (9.38 mg/L) presented IC50 close to the trolox standard (4.0 mg/L) in DPPH method. ABTS test showed the ethanolic extracts twigs (2658.57 µmol/Ltrolox/g extract) and bark (2314.81 µmol/Ltrolox/g extract) with significant values. Results indicates that the species has a good potential for use in the pharmacological area.

Las cortezas de Mimosa caesalpiniifolia, popularmente conocida como “Sabiá”, se usan en la medicina casera para la curación, bronquitis, entre otros. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue evaluar cualitativa y cuantitativamente los metabolitos secundarios presentes y la actividad antioxidante de los extractos de hojas, ramas y corteza de Mimosa caesalpiniifolia en diferentes solventes. Se verificó la presencia de varios metabolitos, entre ellos: fenoles, antocianinas, esteroides y catequinas. Además, se encontraron altas concentraciones de taninos en sus hojas (1471 mg/L). Los extractos también mostraron grandes actividades antioxidantes para los dos métodos de radicales utilizados. El extracto etanólico de las ramas (7.08 mg/L) y los extractos acuosos de las cortezas (9.38 mg/L) presentaron IC50 cerca del estándar trolox (4.0 mg/L) en el análisis con DPPH. En la prueba ABTS, los extractos etanólicos de las ramas (2658.57 µmol/Ltrolox/g extracto) y las cortezas (2314.81 µmol/Ltrolox/g extracto) también mostraron valores significativos. Los resultados indican que la especie tiene un buen potencial para su uso en el área farmacológica.O uso de plantas medicinais para tratamento de problemas de saúde decorre desde a antiguidade e continua bastante atual. As cascas de Mimosa caesalpiniifolia, conhecida popularmente como sabiá, são utilizadas na medicina caseira para cicatrização, bronquite, entre outros. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar qualitativa e quantitativamente os metabólitos secundários presentes e a atividade antioxidante de extratos de folhas, galhos e cascas de Mimosa caesalpiniifolia em diferentes solventes. Foi verificada a presença de vários metabólitos, entre eles: fenóis, antocianinas, esteroides e catequinas. Além disso, foram constatadas altas concentrações de taninos em suas folhas (1471 mg/L). Os extratos mostraram também grandes atividades antioxidantes para os dois métodos de radicais utilizados. O extrato etanólico dos galhos (7,08 mg/L) e o extratos aquoso das cascas (9,38 mg/L) apresentaram CI50 próximo ao padrão trolox (4,0 mg/L) na análise com DPPH. No ensaio ABTS, os extratos etanólicos dos galhos (2658,57 µmol/Ltrolox/g extrato) e cascas (2314,81 µmol/Ltrolox /g extrato) também mostraram valores significativos.
