Self-determination, parental support and coping: comparison at different stages of soccer players athletic career

Resumo: The transition phases of the athletic career have specific demands and needs. Thus, investigating the personal attributes that the athletes have, such as self-determined motivation, coping strategies and parental support they receive, is necessary to verify the management of stressful situations within the sports context, in order to guarantee the adhesion and continuity of the sports practice. This research aimed to investigate the personal attributes of soccer athletes at different stages of athletic development. The subjects were 120 field soccer athletes from a club of the First Division of the Brazilian Championship (13 to 20 years old). As instruments, The Sport Motivation Scale, The Athletic Coping Skills Inventory and The Parenting Styles Inventory were used to assess personal attributes. Motivation, Coping Skills and Parenting Styles were compared among three stages of the sports career: Experimentation, Specialization, and Investment, using Levene’s Test, ANOVA with Bonferroni post hoc and Kruskall-Wallis with Mann-Whitney U to compare between pairs. The results showed the group of athletes in Investment Stage had higher values of Self-determination, greater range of Coping Skills and perception of Parenting Support. Throughout the sports career stages, personal attributes tend to improve, with Coping Skills and Self-determination geared towards training and performance. In addition, parental support is important to maintain the sporting career until the Investment stage.

Así, investigar los atributos personales que poseen los deportistas, como la motivación autodeterminada, las estrategias de afrontamiento y el apoyo de los padres que reciben, es necesario para verificar el manejo de las situaciones estresantes dentro del contexto deportivo, a fin de garantizar la adhesión y continuidad de la práctica deportiva. El objetivo de este estudio fue investigar los atributos personales de los atletas de fútbol de campo en diferentes etapas del desarrollo atlético. 120 jugadores participaron del estudio en un club de la Primera División de la Federación Brasileiro (13 a 20 años). Como instrumentos a utilizar en la Escala de Motivación Deportiva o Inventario de Estrategias de Coping y / o Inventario de Estilos de Crianza para evaluar sus atributos personales. La autodeterminación, las estrategias de coping y los estilos parentales se compararon entre tres fases de la carrera deportiva: Experimentación, Especialización e Inversión, mediante el test de Levene, ANOVA con Bonferroni y Kruskal-Wallis post hoc, con la U de Mann-Whitney para comparación entre ustedes para. Los resultados mostrarán que el grupo de deportistas que no cuentan con Investigación de Pasantía tiene valores más altos de Autodeterminación, mayor cobertura de Estrategias de Afrontamiento y percepción de Apoyo Parental. A lo largo de los años de las fases de la carrera deportiva, los atributos personales tienden a mejorar, con un mayor uso de Estrategias de afrontamiento y una motivación más autodeterminada, orientada a la mejora y el rendimiento. Además, es decir, el apoyo de los padres resulta importante para mantener una carrera deportiva hasta la etapa de inversión.Cada fase da transição da carreira atlética apresenta demandas e necessidades específicas. Assim, investigar os atributos pessoais que os atletas dispõem, como motivação autodeterminada, estratégias de coping e suporte parental que recebem, se mostra necessário para verificar o gerenciamento das situações estressoras dentro do contexto esportivo, de mmodo a garantir a adesão e continuidade da prática esportiva. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar os atributos pessoais de atletas de futebol de campo nas diferentes fases do desenvolvimento atlético. Foram sujeitos 120 jogadores de um clube da Primeira Divisão do Campeonato Brasileiro (13 a 20 anos de idade). Como instrumentos foram utilizados a Escala de Motivação Esportiva, o Inventário de Estratégias de Coping e o Inventário de Estilos Parentais para avaliar os atributos pessoais.  Autodeterminação, Estratégias de Coping e Estilos Parentais foram comparados entre três estágios da carreira esportiva: Experimentação, Especialização e Investimento, por meio do teste de Levene, ANOVA com post hoc de Bonferroni e Kruskal-Wallis, com U de Mann-Whitney para comparação entre os pares. Os resultados evidenciaram que o grupo de atletas no Estágio de Investimento apresentou maiores valores de Autodeterminação, maior amplitude nas Estratégias de Coping e percepção de Suporte Parental. Ao longo das fases da carreira esportiva, os atributos pessoais tendem a melhorar, com maior utilização das Estratégias de Coping e motivação mais autodeterminada, orientada para o treinamento e o rendimento.
