Neurofeedback and brain-computer interface: development and evaluation of a game designed to help in the detection of ADHD

Resumo: Neuropsychological assessment uses interviews, observations, and the application of tests to assist in the investigation and diagnosis process. Some technologies have emerged to assist neuropsychological assessment and therapy, such as neurofeedback. We describe the construction process of a neurofeedback game with a Brain-Computer Interface wireless aimed at helping the detection of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). Two children, one with and one without the disorder, tested the tool. Regarding usability, the experiments showed that both five-year-old participants could fully use the game, performing all the tasks contained in it. The EEG wave behaviors obtained by the solution for the child who had the disorder were like those of ADHD patients found in other studies. In particular, the data generated showed alpha-type activities more frequently in children with ADHD.

Con el avance de las tecnologías, han surgido algunos dispositivos que ayudan a la evaluación y terapia neuropsicológica, como el neurofeedback. Este trabajo describe el proceso completo de construcción, desde la especificación hasta la validación, de una solución destinada a ayudar a la detección del TDAH (trastorno por déficit de atención e hiperactividad), mediante un juego de neurofeedback con interfaz cerebro-ordenador inalámbrica. La herramienta desarrollada se probó con dos niños, uno con y otro sin el trastorno. En cuanto a la usabilidad, los experimentos mostraron que los dos participantes de cinco años eran capaces de utilizar el juego completamente, realizando todas las tareas que contenía. Los comportamientos de las ondas del EEG obtenidos por la solución para el niño con el trastorno eran similares a los de los pacientes con TDAH encontrados en otros estudios. En particular, los datos generados mostraron actividades de tipo Alfa en mayor ocurrencia en el niño con TDAH.A avaliação neuropsicológica faz o uso de entrevistas, observações e aplicação de testes como instrumentos para auxiliar no processo de investigação e diagnóstico. Com o avanço das tecnologias, alguns dispositivos surgiram para auxiliar a avaliação e a terapia neuropsicológica, como o neurofeedback. Este artigo descreve o processo completo de construção, desde a especificação até a validação, de uma solução voltada para auxiliar a detecção de TDAH (Transtorno do déficit de atenção com hiperatividade), por meio de um jogo de neurofeedback com Interface Cérebro-Computador sem fio. A ferramenta desenvolvida foi testada com duas crianças, uma com e outra sem o transtorno. Com relação à usabilidade, os experimentos demonstraram que ambos os participantes de cinco anos conseguiram utilizar o jogo por inteiro, realizando todas as tarefas contidas nele. Os comportamentos das ondas EEG obtidos pela solução para a criança que tinha o transtorno foram similares aos de pacientes com TDAH encontrados em outros estudos.
