Quality analysis of Pariri (Arrabidaea chica) medicinal herb marketed in Belo Horizonte-MG

Resumo: Pariri (Arrabidaea chica) is a plant used for therapeutic purposes, in the form of an infusion of leaves, by the general population. In folk medicine, its leaves have anti-inflammatory, healing, antianemic and astringent properties. The objective of this work was to analyze this plant by physical-chemical and microbiological tests of 14 samples sold in Belo Horizonte. The analysis of samples followed the procedures of current legislation. The packaging and labels of commercial samples were evaluated, in addition to foreign matter and determination of moisture and ash content. The samples showed results consistent with the legislation regarding the evaluation of foreign matter, packaging and labeling. As for the moisture content, only sample 13 is in accordance with the legislation, while the ash content, only samples 8 and 11 were in disagreement. The results of microbiological analyzes for fungi and bacteria showed values below the maximum limit described by legislation. The analysis of total phenolics by the Folin-Ciocalteau method showed results compatible with the values found in the literature. It is concluded, therefore, that although only sample 13 meets the humidity parameter and it contributes to the growth of microorganisms, the results of the analyzes showed values lower than those recommended by legislation. Thus, the samples were, in general, suitable for consumption.

En la medicina popular, sus hojas tienen propiedades antiinflamatorias, cicatrizantes, antianémicas y astringentes. El objetivo de este trabajo fue analizar esta planta mediante pruebas físico-químicas y microbiológicas de 14 muestras vendidas en Belo Horizonte. El análisis de las muestras siguió los procedimientos de la legislación vigente. Se evaluaron empaques y etiquetas de muestras comerciales, además de materia extraña y determinación de contenido de humedad y cenizas. Las muestras arrojaron resultados consistentes con la legislación en materia de evaluación de materias extrañas, empaque y etiquetado. En cuanto al contenido de humedad, solo la muestra 13 está de acuerdo con la legislación, mientras que el contenido de cenizas, solo las muestras 8 y 11 estuvieron en desacuerdo. Los resultados de los análisis microbiológicos para hongos y bacterias arrojaron valores por debajo del límite máximo descrito por la legislación. El análisis de fenoles totales por el método de Folin-Ciocalteau mostró resultados compatibles con los valores encontrados en la literatura. Se concluye, por tanto, que si bien solo la muestra 13 cumple con el parámetro de humedad y contribuye al crecimiento de microorganismos, los resultados de los análisis arrojaron valores inferiores a los recomendados por la legislación. Así, las muestras eran, en general, aptas para el consumo.Pariri (Arrabidaea chica) é uma planta usada com fins terapêuticos, na forma de infusão das folhas, pela população em geral. Na medicina popular suas folhas apresentam propriedades anti-inflamatória, cicatrizante, antianêmica e adstringente. O trabalho teve como objetivo analisar esta planta por testes físico-químicos e microbiológicos de 14 amostras comercializadas em Belo Horizonte. A análise das amostras seguiu os procedimentos das legislações vigentes. Avaliaram-se as embalagens e rótulos das amostras comerciais, além de matéria estranha e da determinação do teor de umidade e cinzas. As amostras apresentaram resultados coerentes com a legislação em respeito à avaliação de matéria estranha, embalagens e rotulagens. Quanto ao teor de umidade apenas a amostra 13 está de acordo com a legislação, enquanto o teor de cinzas, somente as amostras 8 e 11 se mostraram em desacordo. Os resultados das análises microbiológicas para fungos e bactérias mostraram valores abaixo do limite máximo descrito pela legislação. A análise de fenólicos totais pelo método de Folin-Ciocalteau mostrou resultados compatíveis com os valores encontrados na literatura. Conclui-se, portanto, que apesar de apenas a amostra 13 atender o parâmetro umidade e o mesmo contribuir para o crescimento de microrganismos, os resultados das análises mostraram valores inferiores àqueles preconizados pela legislação.
