The importance of extension activities in the academic training of its volunteers and in the quality of life of diabetic patients: a diabetic-friendly extension project

Resumo: | Objective: to evaluate the socio-educational actions of the “Friend of Diabetic Extension Project” (FDEP) and its repercussions for both patients and participating volunteers and employees. Methodology: Cross-sectional, quantitative and qualitative study. The sample consisted of 116 patients seen at the Casa do Diabético, 8 local employees and 53 FDEP volunteers. Data collection took place through interviews with patients, employees and volunteers. Results: When patients were asked about their satisfaction with the project, 62.07% reported feeling very satisfied and 36.20% said they were satisfied. Regarding the change in lifestyle, 50% of diabetics report that the project achieved a partial change in the style of their lives, 43.10% consider that the project helped a lot and was responsible for most of the changes. With regard to employees, 62.5% said they were very satisfied with the performance of the FDEP at home and 25% reported feeling satisfied. As for the academics participating in the project, 96.22% said they were satisfied with the FDEP and 94.34% said that the project allowed them to get closer to the community. Conclusion: FDEP enabled the dialogue between popular and academic knowledge, enabling the exchange of values and experiences. It promoted improvements in the perception of diabetes mellitus not only for patients and their families, but also for NGO employees who were able to have more access to information and who in a way were able to pass on the information acquired. |

Metodología: Estudio transversal, cuantitativo y cualitativo. La muestra estuvo compuesta por 116 pacientes atendidos en la Casa do Diabético, 8 empleados locales y 53 voluntarios de PEAD. La recolección de datos se realizó a través de entrevistas con pacientes, empleados y voluntarios. Resultados: Cuando se les preguntó a los pacientes sobre su satisfacción con el proyecto, el 62,07% informó sentirse muy satisfecho y el 36,20% dijo estar satisfecho. En cuanto al cambio de estilo de vida, el 50% de los diabéticos informa que el proyecto logró un cambio parcial en el estilo de vida, el 43,10% considera que el proyecto ayudó mucho y fue responsable de la mayoría de los cambios. Con respecto a los empleados, el 62,5% dijo estar muy satisfecho con el desempeño del PEAD en casa y el 25% informó sentirse satisfecho. En cuanto a los académicos participantes en el proyecto, el 96,22% dijo estar satisfecho con el PEAD y el 94,34% dijo que el proyecto les permitió acercarse a la comunidad. Conclusión: el PEAD posibilitó el diálogo entre el conocimiento popular y académico, permitiendo el intercambio de valores y experiencias. Promovió mejoras en la percepción de la diabetes mellitus no solo para los pacientes y sus familias, sino también para los empleados de las ONG que pudieron tener más acceso a la información y que de alguna manera pudieron transmitir la información adquirida.Objetivo: avaliar as ações socioeducativas do “Projeto de Extensão Amigo do Diabético” (PEAD) e as suas repercussões tanto para os pacientes quanto para os voluntários e funcionários participantes. Metodologia: Estudo do tipo transversal, de caráter quantitativo e qualitativo. A amostra foi composta por 116 pacientes atendidos na Casa do Diabético, por 8 funcionários do local e por 53 voluntários do PEAD. A coleta de dados ocorreu mediante entrevistas com os pacientes, funcionários e voluntários. Resultados: Quando os pacientes foram questionados sobre a satisfação perante o projeto, 62,07% relataram sentir-se muito satisfeitos e 36,20% afirmaram estarem satisfeitos. Em relação à mudança de estilo de vida, 50% dos diabéticos relatam que o projeto conseguiu uma mudança parcial no estilo de suas vidas, 43,10% consideram que o projeto ajudou muito e foi o responsável pela maior parte das mudanças. Com relação aos funcionários, 62,5% afirmaram estar muito satisfeitos com a atuação do PEAD na casa e 25% relataram sentir-se satisfeitos. Quanto aos acadêmicos participantes do projeto, 96,22% responderam estarem satisfeitos com o PEAD e 94,34% referiram que o projeto permitiu uma maior aproximação deles com a comunidade. Conclusão: O PEAD viabilizou o diálogo entre o saber popular e acadêmico, possibilitando troca de valores e experiências.
