School museums in science teaching: the case of the case of Instituto Superior de Educação do Rio de Janeiro Natural History Museum

Resumo: | Museums and Science Centers are important spaces for scientific education to the public. School Museums are a special sort of museum that congregates from memory and institutional heritage to pedagogical actions aimed at teaching. The ISERJ Natural History Museum, located at the Instituto Superior de Educação do Rio de Janeiro, is an example of a school museum that has a collection of natural history and pedagogical materials aimed at teaching science. The objective of this work is to verify the role of this school museum in teaching science in general and, consequently, for scientific literacy. Our aim was to analyze the meaning and the impact of a science museum within a formal educational institution, using qualitative research methodology with an emphasis on the historical perspective, through a bibliographic and documentary survey of the museum, from the origin of the collection to its relevance in science education, as well as verifying its meaning today. It was possible to see that the creation of the ISERJ school museum was part of a broader educational policy, which dates back to the end of the 19th century, founded on the premise of a more tangible science education. Despite the little knowledge and use of school museums, their existence can be an excellent opportunity to further highlight their merits and their importance for science teaching. |

Los museos escolares son un tipo especial de museo que congrega desde la memoria y el patrimonio institucional, hasta acciones pedagógicas destinadas a la enseñanza. El Museo de Historia Natural de ISERJ, ubicado en el Instituto de Educación Superior de Río de Janeiro, es um ejemplo de museo escolar que posee una colección de historia natural y materiales pedagógicos para la enseñanza de la ciencia. El objetivo de este trabajo es comprobar el papel de ese museo escolar en la enseñanza de la ciencia en general y, en consecuencia, para la alfabetización científica. Nuestro objetivo fue analizar el significado y el impacto de un museo de ciencias dentro de una institución educativa formal, utilizando una metodología de investigación cualitativa con énfasis en la perspectiva histórica, a través de un análisis bibliográfico y documental del museo, desde el origen de la colección a su relevancia en la educación científica, verificando, además, su sentido en la actualidad. Ha sido posible percibir que la creación del museo escolar ISERJ fue parte de una política educativa más amplia, que remonta a fines del siglo XIX, basada en la premisa de una educación científica más tangible. A pesar del poco conocimiento y uso de los museos escolares, su existencia puede ser una excelente oportunidad para destacar aún más sus méritos y su importancia para la enseñanza de las ciências.Museus e Centros de Ciências são importantes espaços para a educação científica do público em geral. Os museus escolares são um tipo especial de museu que congrega desde a memória e o patrimônio institucional, até ações pedagógicas voltadas para o ensino. O Museu de História Natural do ISERJ, situado no Instituto Superior de Educação do Rio de Janeiro, é um exemplo de museu escolar que possui uma coleção de história natural e de materiais pedagógicos voltados para o ensino de ciência. O objetivo deste trabalho é verificar o papel desse museu escolar no ensino de ciência de maneira geral e, consequentemente, para a alfabetização científica. Nosso intuito foi analisar o sentido e impacto de um museu de ciências no interior de uma instituição formal de ensino, sendo usado, para tanto, metodologia de pesquisa qualitativa com ênfase na perspectiva histórica, através de um levantamento bibliográfico e documental do museu, desde a origem da coleção até sua relevância no ensino de ciência, bem como verificar seu sentido hoje em dia. Foi possível perceber que a criação do museu escolar do ISERJ estava inserida em uma política educacional mais ampla, que remonta ao final do século XIX, fundada na premissa de um ensino de ciência mais tangível.
