Resumo: The goal of this study is to analyze the concept of work in Professional and Technological Education (PTE), specifically after the creation of the Federal Institutes (FIs), relating it with the Historical-Cultural Theory developed by Vygotsky. Discussions of the main concepts developed by Vygotsky will be made, such as mediation, Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) and Internalization, aiming at verifying how this theory can contribute to Brazilian PTE. We shall also make a brief assessment of the two theoretical approaches to vygotskyan thought: the Theory of Activity and the Communities of Practices. It is a bibliographic research with qualitative approach. On reflecting over Vygotsky’s contributions for professional education, it is necessary to think of an education in which man is a historical and cultural being and an agent for transformation of the environment in which he survives. His studies show the importance of mediated work, with the prevalence of interaction and the appreciation of the experiences of both teacher and student. In this way, his theory contemplates the professional formation with the goal of emancipation.

Se discutirán los principales conceptos desarrollados por Vygotsky, como mediación, Zona de Desarrollo Próximo (ZDP) e Internalización, con el objetivo de verificar cómo esta teoría puede contribuir a la EPT brasileña. También abordaremos brevemente las dos vertientes teóricas del pensamiento vygotskyano: la teoría de la actividad y las comunidades de práctica. Se trata de una investigación bibliográfica con enfoque cualitativo. Al reflexionar sobre los aportes de Vygotsky a la formación profesional, es necesario pensar en una educación en la que el hombre sea un ser cultural histórico y un agente de transformación del medio en el que sobrevive. Sus estudios revelan la importancia del trabajo mediado, donde prima la interacción y la valoración de las experiencias del educando y del educador. Así, su teoría contempla la formación profesional con el objetivo de la emancipación.O objetivo deste estudo é analisar o conceito de trabalho na Educação Profissional e Tecnológica (EPT), especificamente após a criação dos Institutos Federais (IFs), relacionando-o com a Teoria Histórico-Cultural desenvolvida por Vygotsky. Serão feitas discussões dos principais conceitos desenvolvidos por Vygotsky, como mediação, Zona de Desenvolvimento Proximal (ZDP) e Internalização, objetivando verificar como essa teoria pode contribuir com a EPT brasileira. Faremos também uma breve abordagem das duas vertentes teóricas do pensamento vygotskyano: a Teoria da Atividade e as Comunidades de Práticas. Trata-se de uma pesquisa bibliográfica com abordagem qualitativa. Ao refletir sobre as contribuições de Vygotsky para a educação profissional, é preciso pensar numa educação em que o homem seja um ser histórico cultural e um agente de transformação do meio onde sobrevive. Os seus estudos revelam a importância do trabalho mediado, no qual prevalece a interação e a valorização das experiências do educando e do educador.
