Fungal infections in patients with Covid-19 admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of a University Hospital in the brazilian Northeast

Resumo: Objective: to determine the incidence of fungal infections in patients with Covid, to determine the main topographies and the outcome of patients admitted to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a university hospital in the brazilian Northeast. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional, quantitative study, carried out in the ICU of a university hospital in the brazilian Northeast, from May 2020 to December 2021. Results: Of 252 patients admitted to the COVID ICU, 126 (50,4%) were male and 124 (49,6%) were female. The age group with the highest incidence of nosocomial infections associated with Covid occurred in patients over 60 years of age. As for topography, 74 (29,4%) patients had ventilator-associated pneumonia, 63 (25%) pyogenic primary bloodstream infection, 53 (21%) laboratory ventilator-associated pneumonia, and 44 (17,5%) respiratory tract infections urinary. 70 (38,9%) of the infections were diagnosed through peripheral blood culture and 54 (30%) through tracheal aspirate. Of the total infections, 30 (11,9%) were caused by candida albicans and 23 (9,1%) by non-albicans candida. There were 138 (54,8%) deaths, 23 (62,2%) caused by candida albicans and 14 (37,8%) by non-albicans candida. Conclusion: This study highlights the importance of preventive measures as indicated by patient safety protocols, and of Constant updates for health professionals regarding the proper management of patients in hospital care.

Metodología: Se trata de un estudio transversal, cuantitativo, realizado en la UCI de un hospital universitario del nordeste de Brasil, de mayo de 2020 a diciembre de 2021. Resultados: De 252 pacientes ingresados em la UCI COVID, 126 (50,4%) eran del sexo masculino y 124 (49,6%) del sexo femenino. El grupo de edad con mayor incidencia de infecciones nosocomiales asociadas a Covid se presentó en pacientes mayores de 60 años. En cuanto a la topografía, 74 (29,4%) pacientes presentaron neumonía asociada a ventilador, 63 (25%) infección primaria piógena del torrente sanguíneo, 53 (21%) neumonía asociada a ventilador de laboratorio y 44 (17,5%) infecciones de tracto urinario. 70 (38,9%) de las infecciones fueron diagnosticadas por hemocultivo periférico y 54 (30%) por aspirado traqueal. Del total de infecciones, 30 (11,9%) fueron causadas por candida albicans y 23 (9,1%) por candida no albicans. Conclusión: Este estúdio destaca la importancia de las medidas preventivas indicadas por lós protocolos de seguridad del paciente y de la actualización constante de los profesionales de la salud en cuanto al manejo adecuado de los pacientes em la atención hospitalaria.Objetivo: determinar a incidência de infecções fúngicas em pacientes com Covid, determinar as principais topografias e o desfecho dos pacientes internados em uma Unidade de Terapia Intensiva (UTI) de um hospital universitário do nordeste brasileiro. Metodologia: Trata-se de um estudo transversal, quantitativo, realizado na UTI de um hospital universitário do nordeste brasileiro, no período de maio de 2020 a dezembro de 2021. Resultados: De 252 pacientes admitidos na UTI COVID, 126 (50,4%) eram do sexo masculino e 124 (49,6%) do sexo feminino. A faixa etária de maior incidência de infecções hospitalares associadas à Covid ocorreu em pacientes com mais de 60 anos. Quanto à topografia, 74 (29,4%) pacientes tiveram pneumonia associada à ventilação mecânica clínica, 63 (25%) infecção primária da corrente sanguínea piogênico, 53 (21%) pneumonia associada à ventilação mecânica laboratorial e 44 (17,5%) infecções do trato urinário. 70 (38,9%) das infecções foram diagnosticadas por meio de hemocultura periférica e 54 (30%) por meio de aspirado traqueal. Do total de infecções, 30 (11,9%) foram causadas por candida albicans e 23 (9,1%) por candida não albicans. Registrou-se 138 (54,8%) óbitos, sendo 23 (62,2%) causados por candida albicans e 14 (37,8%) por candida não albicans.
