Health effects of anthocyanins: a systematic review

Resumo: Objective: To carry out a systematic review, demonstrating the prevention of diseases by consuming anthocyanins. Methodology: A systematic search was carried out on the electronic data platforms Lilacs, PubMed, and ScienceDirect for articles that presented the benefits of anthocyanin consumption for some diseases. The articles included in this review are original in vivo and in vitro. The term used was “anthocyanin” in Portuguese and English, restricting the search in the last 10 years. Review articles were excluded, as well as studies that used foods containing anthocyanin or extracts, as other compounds may be involved. Result: After the exclusion steps, 11 articles were selected, being 8 in vitro and 3 studies carried out in vivo with animals, being these mice. The benefits of anthocyanins in diseases such as atherosclerosis, ischemic disease, endothelial dysfunction; neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, neurotoxicity, Huntington's disease; diseases linked to diabetes such as diabetes mellitus, diabetic cardiomyopathy, as well as cancer diseases; in addition to lung diseases. Conclusion: Studies show that intervention with anthocyanin is effective in preventing and treating the diseases presented since they have benefits when added to the diet, including mechanisms of protection, reduction, cell modulation, and activation of pathways.

Metodología: Se realizó una búsqueda sistemática en las plataformas electrónicas de datos Lilacs, PubMed y ScienceDirect de artículos que presentaran beneficios del consumo de antocianinas en relación a algunas enfermedades. Los artículos incluidos en esta revisión son originales in vivo e in vitro. El término utilizado fue “antocianina” en portugués e inglés, restringiendo la búsqueda en los últimos 10 años. Se excluyeron los artículos de revisión, así como los estudios que utilizaron alimentos que contienen antocianinas o extractos, ya que pueden estar involucrados otros compuestos. Resultado: después de los pasos de exclusión, se seleccionaron 11 artículos, siendo 8 in vitro y 3 estudios realizados in vivo con animales, siendo estos ratones. Los beneficios de las antocianinas en enfermedades como: aterosclerosis, enfermedad isquémica, disfunción endotelial; enfermedad neurodegenerativa tal como enfermedad de alzheimer, neurotoxicidad, enfermedad de Huntington; enfermedades ligadas a la diabetes tales como diabetes mellitus, miocardiopatía diabética, así como enfermedades cancerosas; además de enfermedades pulmonares. Conclusión: Los estudios demuestran que la intervención con antocianinas es eficaz en la prevención y el tratamiento de las enfermedades presentadas, ya que tienen beneficios cuando se agregan a la dieta, incluidos los mecanismos de protección, reducción, modulación celular y activación de vías.Objetivo: Realizar revisão sistemática, demonstrando prevenção de doenças proporcionada pelo consumo das antocianinas. Metodologia: Foi realizada uma busca sistemática nas plataformas eletrônicas de dados Lilacs, PubMed e ScienceDirect de artigos que apresentassem benefícios do consumo de antocianinas em relação a algumas doenças. Os artigos incluídos nesta revisão são originais in vivo e in vitro. O termo utilizado foi “antocianina” em português e inglês, restringindo a pesquisa nos últimos 10 anos. Foram excluídos artigos de revisão, como também estudos que utilizaram alimentos que contenham antocianinas ou extratos, já que podem estar envolvidos outros compostos. Resultado: após as etapas de exclusão, foram selecionados 11 artigos, sendo 8 in vitro e 3 estudos realizados in vivo com animais, sendo estes camundongos. Foram apresentados os benefícios das antocianinas em doenças como: aterosclerose, doença isquêmica, disfunção endotelial; doença neurodegenerativa como a doença de Alzheimer, a neurotoxicidade, a doença de Huntington; doenças ligadas à diabetes como a diabetes mellitus, a cardiomiopatia diabética, além de doenças cancerígenas; ademais doenças pulmonares.
