Methology: The research was developed through searches on Scielo (Scientific Electronic Library Online) and Google academic platforms. Based on a literature review, according to Cunha, Cunha & Alves, (2014), which is responsible for aligning an overview of the in-depth literature on the selected topic. They were used as descriptors; Over-the-counter medicines”, “Rational use of medicines”, “Pharmaceutical care”. Finally, 20 publications were selected to compose the study. Conclusion: Through the research of the studies it is possible to conclude the importance of the rational use of over-the-counter medicines, being guided by a pharmaceutical professional, thus avoiding adverse effects such as intoxications, drug interactions among others. Over-the-counter medicines represent 30% of the total pharmaceutical market and are increasingly relevant when they become the population's first choice for self-care. |
