Sanitation conditions in the urban region of the city of Timon-MA, Brazil: indicators by macro-regions

Resumo: This study analyzed the sanitation conditions of the urban region and its indicators by macro-regions, in a city located in the state of Maranhão, Northeastern Brazil. Home sampling was carried out using a structured questionnaire, in addition to cartographic investigation with analysis by municipal macro-regions. The main results revealed inappropriate water storage and use of alternative sources to the official public network; deficit of 56% in sewage and 21.63% in the collection of solid waste. Three macro-regions showed deficits in cleaning public spaces, in water supply, in sanitary sewage and in the disposal of solid waste. It was concluded that with the evaluation of the conditions of unhealthy conditions at home, one can direct a public or private strategic planning that aims at improvements in sanitation and prevention of health problems.

El muestreo de hogares se realizó con la aplicación de un cuestionario estructurado, además de la investigación cartográfica con análisis por macrorregiones municipales. Los principales resultados revelaron almacenamiento inadecuado de agua y uso de fuentes alternativas a la red pública oficial; déficit de 56% en alcantarillado sanitario y 21,63% en recolección de residuos sólidos. Tres macrorregiones mostraron déficits en la limpieza de espacios públicos; en suministro de agua; en alcantarillado sanitario y disposición de residuos sólidos. Se concluyó que con la evaluación de las condiciones de insalubridad en el hogar se puede orientar una planificación estratégica pública o privada hacia mejoras en el saneamiento y prevención de problemas de salud.Este estudo analisou as condições de saneamento da região urbana e seus indicadores por macrorregiões, em uma cidade localizada no estado do Maranhão, Nordeste do Brasil. Foi realizada amostragem domiciliar com aplicação de questionário estruturado, além de investigação cartográfica com análise por macrorregiões municipais. Os principais resultados revelaram armazenamento inapropriado de água e uso de fontes alternativas à rede pública oficial; déficit de 56% de esgotamento sanitário e de 21,63% na coleta de resíduos sólidos. Três macrorregiões apresentaram déficits na limpeza de espaços públicos; no abastecimento de água; no esgotamento sanitário e descarte de resíduos sólidos.
