History of Mathematics in Basic Education: A Study of Undergraduate Students Graduating in Mathematics

Resumo: Researchers in Mathematics Education have pointed out the importance of including History of Mathematics (HM) classes in Basic Education. However, some studies indicate that HM has not been widely implemented by teachers at this stage of education. One of the reasons for this may be a teachers' general lack of knowledge surrounding HM, of the specific material on HM, or of the ways of presenting it in mathematics classes. Given this fact, we conducted research at a federal university located in south Minas Gerais, Brazil, to analyze the concepts surrounding the use of History of Mathematics in Basic Education for Mathematics undergraduates who are studying to become licensed teachers. These students had at least one class subject that addressed HM. The study was conducted by collecting data via an online questionnaire that was answered by 26 undergraduate students from the university. We identified that all participants understand that HM should be used in math classes. Furthermore, they provided justifications as to why HM should be introduced at this level of education. The students also understood that HM can be used to introduce, contextualize, or explain content, or it can be used in conjunction with investigative activities. We identified that future teachers understand that "students who do not like history", "lack of time", and "lack of preparation or insecurity surrounding the use of History of Mathematics in their future classes" may be some of the challenges that they will have to face in order to teach math classes using HM.

Sin embargo, algunos estudios indican que HM no ha sido implementada ampliamente por los profesores en este nivel de educación. Una de las razones de este hecho puede ser la falta de conocimiento de los profesores con respecto a la HM, el material correspondiente a la HM o las formas de presentarlo en las clases de matemáticas. Dado este hecho, realizamos investigaciones para analizar las concepciones que rodean el uso de la Historia de las Matemáticas en la Educación Básica de licenciados en Matemáticas en una universidad federal ubicada en el sur de Minas Gerais, Brasil, que tuvieron contacto, durante su formación académica, con al menos una disciplina que abordaba aspectos de la HM.. La investigación se realizó mediante la recopilación de datos a través de un cuestionario en línea, que fue respondido por 26 licenciados (as). Identificamos que todos los participantes entienden que HM debe usarse en las clases de matemáticas y brindaron justificaciones de por qué HM también se debe presentar en este nivel de educación. Además, los licenciados entienden que HM puede ser utilizada en el aula, en la introducción o contextualización del contenido, en la explicación de éste y/o por medio de actividades investigativas. Hemos identificado que los licenciados entienden que "los estudiantes a quienes no les gusta la historia", "la falta de tiempo" y la "sensación de falta de preparación o la inseguridad en torno al uso de la Historia de las Matemáticas en sus clases futuras" se configuran como desafíos que ellos podrían enfrentar para enseñar Matemáticas por medio de un contexto histórico.A relevância da inclusão da História da Matemática (HM) no ensino de Matemática na Educação Básica tem sido apontada por pesquisadores da área de Educação Matemática. Contudo, algumas investigações indicam que a HM não tem sido muito utilizada pelos professores neste nível de ensino e uma das justificativas para tal seria o pouco conhecimento que os professores têm acerca da HM, de materiais relativos à HM ou de maneiras de apresentá-la em suas aulas. Neste contexto, realizamos uma investigação com o objetivo de analisar as concepções, sobre a utilização da HM na Educação Básica, de licenciandos(as) em Matemática, de uma Universidade Federal localizada no sul de Minas Gerais, que tiveram contato, durante sua formação, com ao menos uma disciplina que aborda aspectos da HM. Utilizamos, para coletar os dados, um questionário, disponibilizado online, que foi respondido por 26 licenciandos(as). Identificamos que todos(as) os(as) participantes entendem que a HM deve ser utilizada em sala de aula e apresentam justificativas para a sua introdução neste nível de ensino. Além disto, eles(as) entendem que a HM pode ser utilizada, em sala de aula, na introdução ou contextualização do conteúdo, na  explicação deste e/ou por meio de  atividades investigativas.
