Suicide among the elderly: what are Brazilian publications about?

Resumo: The study aims to characterize national scientific publications on suicide among the elderly, through an integrative literature review. The searches were carried out in the databases of the Scientific Eletronic Library Online (SCIELO), Latin American Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS) and Medical Literature Analyzes and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), considering the period from January 2000 to June 2020 , using the expression: (suicide OR “suicidal ideation” OR “suicide attempt”) AND (elderly OR seniors OR aging OR old age). 248 articles were found, of which 24 studies met the selection criteria, of these 29% of the publications (n ​​= 7) were published in 2012. In general, the studies use the epidemiological method and psychological or psychosocial autopsies, investigating risk factors related to the phenomenon. It is noticed that there is a complexity of biopsychosocial factors that permeate suicide, and it is essential to develop public policies that focus on the mental health of the elderly.

Las búsquedas se llevaron a cabo en las bases de datos de la Scientific Eletronic Library Online (SCIELO), Literatura Latino Americana em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS) e Medical Literature Analisys and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), considerando el período de enero de 2000 a junio de 2020, usando la expresión: (suicidio O "ideación suicida" O "intento de suicidio") Y (anciano O “personas mayores” O envejecimiento O vejez). Se encontraron 248 artículos, de los cuales 24 estudios cumplieron los criterios de selección, de estos 29% de las publicaciones (n = 7) se publicaron en 2012. En general, los estudios utilizan el método epidemiológico y las autopsias psicológicas o psicosociales, investigando factores de riesgo relacionados con el fenómeno. Se observa que existe una complejidad de factores biopsicosociales que permean el suicidio, y es esencial desarrollar políticas públicas que se centren en la salud mental de los ancianos.O estudo objetiva caracterizar as publicações científicas nacionais sobre o suicídio entre idosos, por meio de uma revisão integrativa da literatura. As buscas foram realizadas nas bases de dados do Scientific Eletronic Library Online (SCIELO), Literatura Latino Americana em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS) e Medical Literature Analisys and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), considerando o período de janeiro de 2000 a junho de 2020, utilizando a expressão: (suicídio OR “ideação suicida” OR “tentativa de suicídio”) AND (idoso OR idosos OR envelhecimento OR velhice). Foram encontrados 248 artigos, dos quais 24 estudos atenderam aos critérios de seleção, destes 29% das publicações (n=7) foram publicados no ano de 2012. De modo geral, os trabalhos utilizam o método epidemiológico e das autópsias psicológicas ou psicossociais, investigando fatores de risco relacionados ao fenômeno.
