The influence of dietary intake of selenium and iodine on hypothyroidism

Resumo: Introduction: Hypothyroidism is a metabolic disease caused by the reduction or absence of thyroid hormones. When damaged or negatively stimulated, the thyroid gland stops producing its hormones, which results in various symptoms. The role of nutrients in maintaining the gland's homeostasis and in controlling hypothyroidism has been widely studied, as a means of auxiliary treatment. Objectives: To identify the influence of selenium and iodine in the control of hypothyroidism. Methods: Through an integrated review, articles from the past 6 years have been found, with the purpose of searching for current scientific evidence around the subject. This review was done in six stages, and the following databases have been used: Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations from University of São Paulo; Google Scholar; LILACS; Lume Digital Repository; Capes Periodicals, National Library of Medicine (PubMed) and SciELO. The determination of the final number of articles was based on the analysis of similarity to the subject, taking into consideration the aim of the research. Results: After searches, 831 articles have been identified, however, only 25 articles have been chosen for analysis and discussion. Conclusion: Selenium and iodine are essential nutrients for the thyroid gland. Supplementation may improve the functioning of this gland and patients' life quality, however, more research is needed to expand the knowledge and improve the efficiency of this approach.

Cuando la glándula tiroides recibe algún daño o estímulo negativo, deja de producir las hormonas tiroideas, lo que provoca diversos síntomas. El papel de los nutrientes en el mantenimiento de la homeostasis de la glándula y en el control del hipotiroidismo ha sido ampliamente estudiado como una forma de tratamiento auxiliar. Objetivo: Identificar la influencia del selenio y el yodo en el control del hipotiroidismo. Métodos: A través de una revisión integrativa, se recopilaron artículos de los últimos 6 años con el propósito de buscar evidencias científicas actuales sobre el tema. Para llevar a cabo esta revisión, se siguieron seis etapas y se utilizaron las siguientes bases de datos: Biblioteca Digital de Tesis y Disertaciones de la USP; Google Académico; LILACS; Lume Repositorio Digital; Periódicos Capes; National Library of Medicine (PubMed) y SciELO. La determinación del número final de artículos se realizó mediante el análisis de similitud con el tema, teniendo en cuenta el objetivo de la investigación. Resultados: Después de las búsquedas, se identificaron 831 artículos, pero solo se seleccionaron 25 artículos para el análisis y la discusión. Conclusión: El selenio y el yodo son nutrientes esenciales para la glándula tiroides. La suplementación puede mejorar el funcionamiento de esta glándula y la calidad de vida de los pacientes, aunque se necesitan más investigaciones para profundizar en el conocimiento y la eficacia de este enfoque.Introdução: O hipotireoidismo é uma doença metabólica causada pela diminuição ou ausência de hormônios tireoidianos.
