Childhood excess weight prevalence in Brazil: systematic review

Resumo: Introduction: Increasing worldwide overweight rates in children are concerning and reinforce the risk of several chronic diseases in adulthood. An overview of the status regarding childhood excess weight in Brazil is essential to understand, formulate and improve actions to face this condition and accomplish health and quality of life to Brazilian children and adolescents. Objective: Systematically describe childhood overweight and obesity rates and its associated factors. Methods: Systematic review of studies published between 2015 and 2019, based on search in electronic databases PubMed, Scielo, MEDLINE, LILACS, ADOLEC and Science Direct. The STROBE scale was used to evaluate the quality of the studies included. Results: Out of 1334 studies screened, 23 studies were included in this review. The prevalence of overweight, overweight and obesity ranged from 0.9% to 35.4%, being higher in the country’s Southern region and with slight variations in terms of sex and age. Conclusion: Due to the methodological differences present in the selected studies, it was found variability between the prevalence rates of excess weight in children in Brazil. This review reflects the necessity of facing this condition in Brazilian children and adolescents.

En Brasil, el análisis de la prevalencia del sobrepeso en este grupo etario es fundamental para comprender, formular y perfeccionar acciones de enfrentamiento que implementen la calidad de vida y salud de los niños y adolescentes brasileños. Objetivo: Describir sistemáticamente las tasas de sobrepeso infantil. Métodos: Revisión sistemática de estudios publicados entre 2015 y 2020, utilizando las bases de datos electrónicas PubMed, Scielo, MEDLINE, LILACS, ADOLEC y Science Direct. La evaluación de la calidad de cada estudio se realizó mediante la escala STROBE. Resultados: De 1334 estudios examinados, se incluyeron 23 estudios. La prevalencia de sobrepeso, sobrepeso y obesidad osciló entre 0,9% y 35,4%, siendo mayor en la región sur del país y con ligeras variaciones en función del sexo y la edad. Conclusión: Debido a diferencias metodológicas en los estudios, hubo variabilidad entre las tasas de prevalencia de sobrepeso en niños en Brasil. La presente revisión refleja la necesidad de enfrentar esa condición en niños y adolescentes brasileños.  Introdução: O aumento das taxas de excesso de peso infantil no mundo é preocupante e amplia os riscos de diversas doenças crônicas na vida adulta. No Brasil, a análise da prevalência de excesso de peso nesta faixa etária é fundamental para compreender, formular e aprimorar ações para seu enfrentamento que implementem a qualidade de vida e saúde das crianças e adolescentes brasileiros. Objetivo: Descrever sistematicamente as taxas de excesso de peso infantil. Métodos: Revisão sistemática de estudos publicados entre 2015 e 2020, utilizando as bases de dados eletrônicas PubMed, Scielo, MEDLINE, LILACS, ADOLEC e Science Direct. A avaliação da qualidade de cada estudo foi realizada com o auxílio da escala STROBE. Resultados: De 1334 estudos rastreados, 23 estudos foram incluídos. A prevalência de excesso de peso, sobrepeso e obesidade variou de 0.9% a 35.4%, sendo maior na região Sul do país e com variações discretas quanto a sexo e idade. Conclusão: Devido às diferenças metodológicas dos estudos, houve variabilidade entre as taxas de prevalência de excesso de peso infantil no Brasil.
