Resumo: | Mainly for the elderly, nursing conveys personal care that prevents, reduces or manages the consequences and vulnerabilities resulting from the aging process. It is known that aging is inevitable and, according to WHO data, in the coming decades the world population over 60 years will increase from 841 million to 2 billion by 2050. The present work aims to report the main care and procedures and the performance of nursing in geriatrics. We searched the VHL for articles published and indexed in the LILACS, MEDLINE AND SCIELO databases, from 2017 to 2022, in English, Spanish and Portuguese. After pre-established criteria, 24 articles were selected. The main functions of gerontological nursing are: taking care of the health of the elderly; assist the elderly when they are sick; guide the elderly to prevent health problems; assist and care for the elderly in recovery and rehabilitation; assist the elderly on a continuous basis, in cases of chronic disease and at the end of life; in addition to performing a thorough examination of the patient, which includes assessments of the family and the community in which the elderly person is hospitalized. Through these various assessments, a system of care and personal assistance is developed to fully assist the patient, in hospital facilities, in residences, nursing homes or in other areas of residence of the elderly. The monitoring and care of the nursing service in relation to the elderly is very important, as the physical and personal care provided by the nurse favors comfort conditions for the elderly, leading to well-being. |

Se sabe que el envejecimiento es inevitable y, según datos de la OMS, en las próximas décadas la población mundial mayor de 60 años aumentará de 841 millones a 2 mil millones para el año 2050. El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo reportar los principales cuidados y procedimientos y el desempeño de enfermería en geriatría. Se realizaron búsquedas en la BVS de artículos publicados e indexados en las bases de datos LILACS, MEDLINE Y SCIELO, de 2017 a 2022, en inglés, español y portugués. Después de criterios preestablecidos, se seleccionaron 24 artículos. Las principales funciones de la enfermería gerontológica son: cuidar la salud de las personas mayores; ayudar a los ancianos cuando están enfermos; orientar a los ancianos para prevenir problemas de salud; ayudar y cuidar a los ancianos en recuperación y rehabilitación; asistir a los ancianos de manera continua, en casos de enfermedad crónica y al final de la vida; además de realizar un examen minucioso del paciente, que incluye valoraciones de la familia y la comunidad en la que se encuentra hospitalizado el adulto mayor. A través de estas distintas valoraciones se desarrolla un sistema de atención y asistencia personal para asistir integralmente al paciente, en instalaciones hospitalarias, en residencias, residencias de mayores o en otros espacios de residencia de mayores. El acompañamiento y cuidado del servicio de enfermería con relación al anciano es muy importante, ya que el cuidado físico y personal brindado por el enfermero favorece condiciones de confort para el anciano, conduciendo al bienestar.Principalmente para os idosos, a enfermagem veicula cuidados pessoais que previnem, reduzem ou gerenciam as consequências e vulnerabilidades decorrentes do processo de envelhecimento. É sabido que o envelhecimento é inevitável e, segundo dados da OMS, nas próximas décadas a população mundial com mais de 60 anos aumentará de 841 milhões para 2 bilhões até 2050. O presente trabalho tem por objetivo relatar os principais cuidados e procedimentos e a atuação da enfermagem na geriatria. Buscou-se na BVS artigos publicados e indexados nas bases de dados LILACS, MEDLINE E SCIELO, no ano de 2017 a 2022, nos idiomas de inglês, espanhol e português. Após critérios pré-estabelecidos foram selecionados 24 artigos. As principais funções da enfermagem gerontológica são: cuidar da saúde do idoso; assistir os idosos quando estão doentes; orientar os idosos para prevenir problemas de saúde; assistir e cuidar de idosos em recuperação e reabilitação; assistir o idoso de forma contínua, nos casos de doença crônica e em final de vida; além de realizar um exame minucioso do paciente, que inclui avaliações da família e da comunidade em que o idoso está internado. Por meio dessas diversas avaliações, é desenvolvido um sistema de cuidado e assistência pessoal para atender integralmente o paciente, em instalações hospitalares, em residências, asilos ou em outras áreas de residência do idoso.
