Piceatannol: a natural stilbene with a broad spectrum of biological activities

Resumo: Piceatannol (trans-3,3,4,5-tetrahydroxystilbene) is a structural analogue related to resveratrol, belonging to the stilbene group. It is found in natural sources such as almonds, peanuts, teas, berries, and passion fruit, but mainly in grapes and in the seeds of passion fruits. Studies have shown a range of health-promoting biological properties for piceatannol, with emphasis for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer potential. Although resveratrol has been the stilbene most known and studied, studies have shown that piceatannol is found in higher amounts than resveratrol in several natural plant sources, and, in addition, due to the presence of the additional hydroxyl group in the 3' position in its structure, has shown some biological activities superior to those of resveratrol. In view of this, in this study a systematic literature review was carried out on the main chemical characteristics, natural sources and biological properties of piceatannol. Thus, this study will contribute and encourage the dissemination of knowledge and development of new studies about this natural compound potentially useful for human health.

Se encuentra en fuentes naturales como almendras, maní, té, bayas y maracuyá, pero principalmente en uvas y semillas de maracuyá. Los estudios han demostrado que tiene una variedad de propiedades biológicas que promueven la salud, con énfasis en el potencial antioxidante, antiinflamatorio y anticancerígeno. Aunque el resveratrol ha sido el estilbeno más conocido y estudiado, los estudios han demostrado que el piceatannol está presente en cantidades más altas que el resveratrol en varias fuentes naturales de plantas y, además, debido a la presencia del grupo hidroxilo adicional en la posición 3' en su estructura ha mostrado algunas actividades biológicas superiores a las del resveratrol. Ante ello, en este estudio se realizó una revisión sistemática de la literatura sobre las principales características químicas, fuentes naturales y propiedades biológicas del piceatannol. Así, este estudio contribuirá y fomentará la difusión del conocimiento y el desarrollo de nuevos estudios sobre este compuesto natural potencialmente útil para la salud humana.Piceatannol (trans-3,3,4,5-tetrahidroxiestilbeno) é um análogo estrutural relacionado ao resveratrol, pertencente ao grupo dos estilbenos. É encontrado em fontes naturais como amêndoas, amendoim, chás, berries e maracujá, mas principalmente em uvas e nas sementes de maracujá. Estudos têm mostrado que ele possui uma gama de propriedades biológicas promotoras de saúde, com destaque para o potencial antioxidante, anti-inflamatório e anticancerígeno. Embora o resveratrol tem sido o estilbeno mais conhecido e mais estudado, estudos têm mostrado que o piceatannol está presente em quantidades superiores às do resveratrol em diversas fontes vegetais naturais e, além disso, devido à presença do grupo hidroxila adicional na posição 3’ em sua estrutura tem apresentado algumas atividades biológicas superiores às do resveratrol. Em vista disso, nesse estudo foi realizada uma revisão bibliográfica sistemática, acerca das principais características químicas, fontes naturais e propriedades biológicas do piceatannol.
