Multigenerational households: satisfaction and difficulties presented by grandparents who care for grandchildren

Objective: to identify aspects of satisfaction and difficulties presented by grandparents who take care of their grandchildren. Methodology: quantitative, exploratory and descriptive study, with grandparents aged 60 years or older, caregivers of children and/or pre-adolescents, living or not in the same family unit, without and/or with the presence of the parent(s) or adoptive parents, having the responsibility of the integral or partial care of subjects up to 13 years of age. An instrument was used with questions about satisfaction and questions about difficulties in the care of the grandfather to the grandson, elaborated by the authors themselves and validated by face and content. A descriptive exploratory analysis of the variables was carried out, with absolute and relative frequency analysis. Results: the vast majority are satisfied with the care of their grandchildren, feeling happy and motivated. Among the difficulties pointed out are fatigue and stress as a result of the care provided. Conclusion: The findings demonstrate relevant subsidies for the inclusion of this agenda in Public Policies, so as not to harm their health, social life and quality of life.
