Hospital management: Application of the PDCA cycle as a strategy to combat COVID-19 in urgent and emergency units

Resumo: | This study aims to understand the stages of the PDCA Cycle as a coping plan for COVID-19 in Urgency and Emergency Units. It is an integrative literature review, carried out by searching for articles indexed in the Virtual Health Library (VHL). The inclusion criteria include literature review research available in the databases described, between the years 2010 to 2020. The exclusion criteria were duplicate, incomplete articles, abstracts, reviews, debates, experience reports and articles unavailable in the whole. To collect the data, 09 scientific articles and 03 studies referring to health entities were analyzed. The results show the stages of the PDCA cycle being, plan, execute, verify and act. With an emphasis on contextualizing the implementation of the PDCA cycle as a plan to reduce COVID-19 cases in urgent and emergency services, it is revealed that the lack of information from the population on when to use urgent and emergency services has been a great difficulty for professionals in times of pandemic, resulting in agglomerations in the referred units and overload of the system. We conclude that the PDCA cycle can be applicable to the most diverse types of organizations, including urgent and emergency services, making it possible to reduce the high demand of the population for highly complex services. |

Es una revisión integradora de la literatura, realizada mediante la búsqueda de artículos indexados en la Biblioteca Virtual en Salud (BVS). Los criterios de inclusión incluyen la investigación de revisión de la literatura disponible en las bases de datos descritas, entre los años 2010 a 2020. Los criterios de exclusión fueron artículos duplicados, incompletos, resúmenes, revisiones, debates, informes de experiencias y artículos no disponibles en el todo. Para la recolección de datos se analizaron 09 artículos científicos y 03 estudios referidos a entidades de salud. Los resultados muestran las etapas del ciclo PDCA: planificar, ejecutar, verificar y actuar. Con énfasis en contextualizar la implementación del ciclo PDCA como plan de reducción de casos de COVID-19 en servicios de urgencia y emergencia, se revela que la falta de información de la población sobre cuándo utilizar los servicios de urgencia y emergencia ha sido un gran dificultad para los profesionales en tiempos de pandemia, resultando en aglomeraciones en las referidas unidades y sobrecarga del sistema. Concluimos que el ciclo PDCA puede ser aplicable a los más diversos tipos de organizaciones, incluidos los servicios de urgencias y emergencias, permitiendo reducir la alta demanda de la población por servicios de alta complejidad.Este estudo tem como objetivo compreender as etapas do Ciclo PDCA como plano de enfrentamento da COVID-19 em Unidades de Urgência e Emergência. Trata – se de uma revisão integrativa de literatura, realizado por meio da busca de artigos indexados na Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS). Os critérios de inclusão compreendem pesquisas de revisão da literatura disponíveis nos bancos de dados descritos, compreendidos entre os anos de 2010 a 2020. Os critérios de exclusão, foram artigos duplicados, incompletos, resumos, resenhas, debates, relato de experiência e artigos indisponíveis na íntegra. Para o levantamento dos dados foram analisados 09 artigos científicos e 03 estudos referentes à entidades de saúde. Os resultados apresentam as etapas do ciclo PDCA sendo, planejar, executar, verificar e agir. Com ênfase na contextualização da implementação do ciclo PDCA como plano de redução dos casos de COVID-19 nos serviços de urgência e emergência, revela – se, que a falta de informação da população sobre quando utilizar dos serviços de urgência e emergência, vem sendo uma grande dificuldade para os profissionais em tempos de pandemia, resultando em aglomerações nas referidas unidades e sobrecarga do sistema.
