Perception of freshmen students of the physiotherapy course about the profession: qualitative study

Resumo: The present study identified the perceptions and motivations about the field of Physiotherapy of freshmen undergraduates. This is a descriptive qualitative study with 27 students who answered a structured questionnaire consisting of eight discursive questions about the concept, reasons and expectations related to Physiotherapy. The answers were transcribed in full, analyzed and categorized according to the Content Analysis method. Participants reported that the purpose of Physiotherapy is related to rehabilitation. This is a typical account of freshmen, possibly influenced by the stereotype related to Physiotherapy. However, the findings allow us to infer that the participants also have a perception about the broad role and attributions of the physiotherapist professional. Furthermore, among the factors that permeated the motivations for professional choice, it was observed that care, personal experiences, characteristics of physiotherapy and the course, frustration and the desire for personal fulfillment influenced this process.

Se trata de un estudio cualitativo descriptivo con 27 estudiantes que respondieron un cuestionario estructurado compuesto por ocho preguntas discursivas sobre el concepto, razones y expectativas relacionadas con la Fisioterapia. Las respuestas fueron transcritas íntegramente, analizadas y categorizadas según el método de Análisis de Contenido. Los participantes informaron que el propósito de la fisioterapia está relacionado con la rehabilitación. Este es un relato típico de estudiantes de primer año, posiblemente influenciado por el estereotipo relacionado con la fisioterapia. Sin embargo, los hallazgos permiten inferir que los participantes también tienen una percepción sobre el rol amplio y las atribuciones del fisioterapeuta profesional. Además, entre los factores que permearon las motivaciones para la elección profesional, se observó que el cuidado, las vivencias personales, las características de la fisioterapia y el curso, la frustración y el deseo de realización personal influyeron en este proceso.O presente estudo identificou as percepções e motivações sobre a área da Fisioterapia de graduandos ingressantes. Trata-se de um estudo descritivo qualitativo com 27 alunos que responderam um questionário estruturado composto por oito questões discursivas sobre o conceito, motivos e expectativas relacionados a Fisioterapia. As respostas foram transcritas na íntegra, analisadas e categorizadas segundo o método da Análise de Conteúdo. Os participantes relataram que a finalidade da Fisioterapia se relaciona a reabilitação. Esse é um relato típico dos ingressantes, possivelmente influenciado pelo estereótipo relacionado à Fisioterapia. No entanto, os achados permitem inferir que os participantes também possuem uma percepção sobre a ampla atuação e atribuições do profissional fisioterapeuta.
