Resumo: | Jatobá tincture is popularly used in the treatment of urinary infection. However, it is necessary to determine the safety and efficacy of these products in order to ensure quality and avoid risks to consumer health. The present study aimed to determine the physical-chemical parameters and to investigate the phytochemical groups of the tincture of Jatobá (Hymenaea spp.), as well as to evaluate its antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, in samples produced at the Home Remedies Workshop of CENEP – Nova Palmeira – PB. For the physicochemical evaluation, pH, density and total solids tests were carried out. The phytochemical groups were identified by specific chemical reactions and the phenolic content expressed in tannic acid by UV-VIS spectroscopy. To prove the antimicrobial efficacy, the agar diffusion method was used. The results obtained from the analysis of jatobá tincture revealed a homogeneous mixture of reddish brown color, average pH of 5.11 ± 0.01, density 0.9237 ± 0.01 total solids 3.37 ± 0.02 and polyphenol content between 3.46% and 3.77%. The tincture showed antimicrobial efficacy against E. coli, with inhibition halos on average of 11.6 ± 0.06 mm, thus presenting a good inhibition capacity. The characteristics evaluated are important in determining the quality of the product and for carrying out further stability studies, in addition to evidencing the antimicrobial potential against E. coli, the main bacterium related to urinary tract infection, serving as an incentive to carry out new studies with chemical and pharmacological approaches to jatobá. |
